"Influenza Vaccination Is The Best Tool"

I miss the days when the forum was called Vaccination Discussion AND Debate. This time, I'm hoping for more of a discussion.

Does anyone have any evidence backing the claim that influenza vaccination is the BEST tool to prevent catching and spreading the illness? Specifically, I'm looking for figures comparing it to other prevention measures such as hand-washing and quarantining (e.g. voluntarily staying home from work or school when sick). Has any research been done in this area?

Thanks in advance.

Surely the best choice is to do all of those things. It's not either or!

Well, if you think the flu shot is perfectly safe and harmless, then yes, do all those things.

If you don't think the flu shot is safe and harmless, then looking at alternates becomes important.

That being said, almost all the ads I see for flu shots use wording such as "get your flu shot - it is your best defense against the flu."  I think the claim of "best" might be false.  I have read a couple of studies showing hand washing and proper cough hygiene cuts down on flu transmission by 50%.  50% may be better than the protection offered by the flu shot (depends on what demographic you fall in, and how well the strain matches for that year)

Yeah I do think the flu vaccine (shot or flumist) is harmless in the majority of cases - that's what the evidence shows.

But I do also agree that advertising in the US goes too far, and the vaccines are pushed too much. But I think that about most US advertising! ;)

The flu is harmless in the majority of cases, too--that's what the evidence shows.
