Return to old pertussis vaccine

We switched to the newer pertussis vaccine because it is considered safer than the old one. However, it is not as effective. If you are pro vaccine, do you think we should switch back to the less safe, more effective vaccine? Why or why not?

I don't think we're there yet, but if whooping cough becomes significantly more prevalent there may be a case for switching to a more effective vaccine even if it has more side effects.

We see this with polio - IPV is the best choice in countries where polio is very rare because OPV has much higher side effect rates. But where polio is endemic IPV is simply not effective enough, so OPV becomes the best choice in the risk-benefit analysis.
