When is a good age to begin knitting and crochet?

When I was a kid I used to do a lot of needlework like cross stitch, embroidery, needlepoint, etc. I had always wanted to knit and thought it would be fun to learn with my dd. She is showing a lot of interest in knitting and sewing and has been beginning to learn sewing in school. My dd is only 5 but has good motor skills for her age. Most of the knitting kits I see say somewhere between 6-9+. I'm worried she may be a little too young. Since I have no real experience I'm not sure. I have looked at some books and think she should be able to pull off finger knitting at least.

What is a good age to begin?

I think 6 or 7 is a good age.

I think DD was just over 6 when we first tired but she found it quite difficult. I sat her on a kiddie chair in front of me and held my hands over hers till she got the idea, Gradually she has come round to it more, and now at 9 is able to knit independently, still needs help with sorting any mistakes though.

She got the hand of the French knitting doll before that though

I taught ds to do French Knitting/ Spool Knitting around 4.5. We made a spool out of a toilet paper tube, Popsicle sticks, and duct tape.  I had tried it with other kids and some of them like it young (4/5 and some don't-really depends on the kid).  But it is an easy, inexpensive way to start.  This page pretty much explains what we did: http://www.kidspot.com.au/kids-activities-and-games/craft-activities+1/winter-craft--make-a-french-knitting-machine+12037.htm

I think I learned to crochet when I was five.

My great grandmother taught my how to crochet when I was around four or five - thought for a long time I kind of did it my own way, instead of the proper way. It was a few years before I could hold the hook properly and coordinate all the movements "by the book". And that was just a basic chain stitch. But I think the younger you start, the easier it will be for a kid to pick up. I stopped it for years before learning any more stitches, and now it's really hard for me to learn new ones.

I think I learned around 8 or so. I don't see why you couldn't try your daughter out with it, though. If she has trouble with the necessary coordination you can always put it down and try again in six months or a year. Don't they teach kids to knit in Waldorf schools in first grade?

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I'm going to try some loom knitting first so she can get the general feeling and I figure we can add needles later if she's interested. I have the type of kid that if she gets frustrated it can turn her off something for a long time. I had learned finger knitting when I was about that age and it doesn't seem to be any harder to do a basic stitch on the loom.

I have learned knitting and crocheting when I was in 7th standard. So in my opinion 12 or 13 is the the right age to begin knitting and crocheting.

Dd has been able to do a single chain crochet for a couple years, but wasn't interested in doing rows.  She is just now getting the hang of knitting-I bought her big needles (I think size 13?) and chunky yarn for Christmas and she is working slowly on a scarf.  She is almost 7.  She did like the finger knitting and spool knitting when she was younger.
