Hello crafty mamas- I am new to this forum, but hope to become a crafty mama myself in 2014.... I have decided to make all the gifts myself in 2014 for all birthdays and Christmas ( I am starting early, I am talking about Christmas 2014!) for various reasons (to make gifts more meaningful and personal, to save money, to reduce waste and my impact on the planet, etc) . But I am new to crafting and gift making! I need help and ideas! I need to make a gift for boy who is turning 9 in January.... Please help! What can I make? Thank you in advance for any suggestions!!!!!!

Does he like Minecraft? Anything cubical or square can be made into a Minecraft themed something. For instance you could make a Minecraft clock. You'd buy a 6 inch square piece of wood at Michaels craft store, paint it like a Minecraft block (many different style blocks to choose from, images available online) or you could print the pattern and glue it on if you can get an image to print the right size. Then, you would drill a 1/4" hole in the middle and put a clock kit on it. Or you could paint a plain tissue box cover from the craft store to look like a Minecraft block. Or a wood cube that could be used as a storage bin. You could paint black squares in the appropriate positions on a green t-shirt to make a Minecraft "Creeper" shirt.

If he likes LEGOs, there are a bunch of LEGO themed craft ideas to be found if you do an online search.

This fort building kit is pretty awesome and inexpensive to make which is a bonus!

Some more ideas:

Mini marshmallow gun: http://www.theidearoom.net/2009/05/make-miniature-marshmallow-gun.html

Personalized Lego project tray: http://www.somewhatsimple.com/build-a-quick-and-clever-lego-tray/

If he likes minecraft, you can make all kinds of gifts. For my son, I'll be making minecraft finger puppets out of felt, a fleece blanket appliqued with a minecraft scene. The characters are dead easy to make, it's just blocks! You could even whip up a quick fleece blanket with characters sewn on, do a pillow that matches and make a drawstring bag for a "minecraft sleepover set"

If you can get your hands on a cheap pair of green mittens, you could turn them into creeper mitts.

I found bags of little wooden cubes at the dollar store, and painted them to be the different coloured blocks you use in the game. I hot glued some together to make the different characters. My son adored this little minecraft set and the whole thing cost me less than $5 to make.

All of my kids are getting these this year. # boys and 1 girl, ages 5, 7, 9, 11.

DIY Totoro hoodies! You'd have to know if he is a Studio Ghibli fan. I picked the grey hoodies up at Target for $9 each.

Best wishes! We love making homemade gifts!
