Has anyone started a daycare or preschool (especially in a RENTED space)?

Thread Starter

I've previously worked at preschools and daycares, and even had a small in-home daycare.  Now I'm being asked if I want to start a daycare or preschool in a local community center.

I'm very intrigued, but maybe a little out of my depth.  Anyone had experience?

THe main thing that comes to mind for me is the licencing regulations in your state. Whatever the space is, it will need to meet licensing requirements, either for a child care or a preschool. This could involve renovations that could be extensive (or not); who would pay for them or be liable if something went wrong?

I'm sure others will be here soon to weigh in on this important question!

I think it all depends on your state.  It's not hard to find out what you would need, but I know for sure, it's a lot of work, money, and time before you can even accept kids in most states.  Who would come up with the insurance and the upfront money to start this?

Preschool is usually much simpler when it comes to licensing in a lot of states. I would look into starting with that and expanding into daycare later on if you wanted.

It should be similar.

That's actually not true in many states. Often times, part day preschools (less than four hours) don't need to have a license or follow licensing standards.

Thanks Polliwog. That is enlightening (and very concerning too).
