Does anyone else do unassisted pregnancy care or birth?

This is my 3rd unassisted pregnancy, and hopefully my second unassisted birth.  Anyone else?  :-)

I'm considering it this go round. I've had 2 homebirths with a midwife. I'm a homebirth midwife apprentice so I am tempted to have a hands off midwife there but for some reason I'm being drawn to UC.

I'll probably be doing a good chunk of my own care/monitoring. My husband is really uncomfortable with UP/UC, but I'm preparing for the possibility of a UC - my first labor was incredibly quick. Knowledge is power.

My MW lives about 7 hours away, so I only have about 3 prenatals and she's missed 2 births... so I'd say I am minimal prenatal and prepared for UC.

I have had all my babies UC  (planning my sixth birth) we see a group of midwives to make getting birth certificates easier.

Really I should read up on this. My last birth, was 1 hour from1-10cm. Babys head came out before attendants made it.

yay! glad to see there are others in this ddc.  I keep a midwife's chart and do my own prenatals..  I just got my urinalysis sticks in the mail today to monitor my nutrition.  Gotta get a decent BP monitor - the one I had died since my last pregnancy.

I'm getting ready for my second unassisted pregnancy and birth, third child (I had a very hands-off midwife with my first).

I've had 6 UCs, but I'm thinking about hiring a midwife this time.

Not UC even though I wanted to consider it this time. I'm very low-intervention when it comes to pregnancy care, haven't had 1st appointment or anything yet.

I'm planning a family birth and will be forgoing any routine prenatal care.  I do have some unique health concerns so I'll be ordering some of my own labs through a naturopath and asking the midwife I work with to help assess baby's growth.  I am part of Indie Birth online and help create online classes and resources for women that are interested in taking responsibility for their own care, and the people we provide services too are mostly unassisted birthers, so I'm happy to see a little community here :)

Ooh, I really like the term family birth! It's so much more accurate than unassisted, at least in my experience so far.

I feel  that that implies that a birth with a birth attendant is not a family birth, which is not true. The addition of a birth attendant doesn't mean the exclusion of the family!

True, but it does mean it isn't only the family there. Anyway - whatever terms work for each of us, right? I know my family assists me quite a bit during birth. :)

Just curious.... why would you want to hire a midwife?

This will be my my sixth unassisted birth I have never done it any other way... yet I am intrigued  when other UC birther's choose another path.

Have you had other experiences or is unassisted all you know?

I had a UC with my second and while it was an amazing experience that I wouldn't trade, I would still choose to have a midwife over UC pending she is the hands off kind. I made it really clear to my midwife last time that all I wanted her there for was In case of emergency... She checked me once right before baby was born and she stayed in the other room while I hung out with my husband till it was time to push and then she coached my DH who really was happy to have her guidance on how to catch baby underwater. Cleaned up and was out of there within an hour. I like having a midwife so that I can just focus on what I need to do instead judging if something is going wrong. Plus I love someone else cleaning up after! Not sure I can get a midwife this time though so it might be another UC.

I've only had UCs. I think having midwife might be fun. My pregnancies have all been uneventful and my births have been fast (1-3 hours for the last 5), but I think having someone to bounce ideas/concerns off of would be nice.

Yay, not alone. :joy Never gone unassisted but my last was quite hands off, I caught the baby. My partner and I both want to go UC this time. I've homebirthed, without complication 3 times. Once needed some tincture for a bleed, but I will prepare for that. Now that insurance in won't cover HB it seems the only option for us. I won't do a hospital or a birth center.

Why did you choose to go unassisted that first time?

sorry I am curious....

We did not want an ultrasound and since I started getting care so late (second trimester) my midwives could not care for me. My birth center birth was a no go, I was really apprehensive about going to the hospital for birth and  my husband suggested just staying home and that is what we did!

I think having a midwife is helpful for clean up. I don't have mother/sister or nearby friends to help with tha stuff, I'm sure they would travel I just don't want them there LOL
