Measuring Fundal Height

So last night after thanksgiving dinner, one of my friends was checking out my belly. I should note that I really wasn't feeling up to eating a lot, so I didn't eat much. And I noticed I could feel what I'm thinking is my uterus above my belly button. And seeing as how I shouldn't be feeling it there, I freaked out and grabbed a tape measure. She measured me too and we both got 21cm. I'm 13 weeks. Now neither of us are trained of course, so I'm hoping we were just mistaking something there. At 11 weeks my midwife couldn't feel the top of my uterus at all. So basically, is there anything I might be mistaking for the top of my uterus that's about an inch above my belly button? I know my dates are right, so I'm a bit worried we could have a twin situation going on. But not that worried.

And that's right, we were totally measuring my fundal height at Thanksgiving.

My only thought - was your bladder full? Earlier in pregnancy, there were a couple times I thought it was my fundus, but I had to pee. (Insert embarrassed face here.)

If your trained mw couldn't feel anything 2 weeks ago, then you were probably not feeling your uterus above your belly button. Typically you would be feeling it just above your pubic bone and below your belly button. I can clearly feel mine about 3 fingers below my belly button.

So I had my dh check this morning, and he felt it about 11 cm up. He told me up above was my intestines. Feeling silly, but I'm glad I didn't call my mw freaking out!

I was wondering how to measure this, is it from pubic bone up to belly button?

It is from the pubic bone to the top of your uterus.  Generally speaking, how many cm it is from the pubic bone to the fundus (top of the uterus) is how many weeks along you are. (Plus or minus a cm or two)  It is usually right at your belly button at 20 weeks but that is a bit variable.

Mine is right above it.  LOL   This is baby #6 but it still cracks me up.    I usually even out right around 20 wks so I will probably stay this way for the next 2 months.

Yeah the thing with the belly button never worked well for me either, lol.  With my second, I carried him so low, he was still UNDER my belly button at 24 weeks.  But the fundal height has always measured right.  With this one, I am measuring a bit bigger but it is my 4th.

Ok from my pubic bone to just below my belly button I measure right on target for how many weeks I am in cm. I thought I would measure a bit bigger because I'm overweight, but when I lay down my stomach generally flattens down. I have gained a whole inch if I measure around my belly though -standing up.

I am measuring 5-6 weeks ahead.  I'm 14 weeks and measuring at my belly button 19-20cm.  I'm a little freaked out about that.  I messaged my mw to ask her if that's normal for a 5th baby.  headscratch.gif

Mine is about half way between my pubic bone and my belly button.

My MW said that I was "more like an 18-20 week belly" at my 14wk appt, but didn't seem too interested beyond mentioning that ... she's pretty low key, and this was all by feel, no actual measuring. I'll be seeing the more medically-minded of my team of 3 at my January appointment, and see if that measuring ahead concerns her in any way. This is my 3rd, and I do feel quite a bit *more* pregnant than I did with either of the first two at this point.

When my husband asked if there was only 1 in there, my MW said I am measuring on track so its probably not twins. The fundus was about half way between my belly button and pubic bone.
