My parents both worked at first I don't think they even made it a whole year. They would work opposite shifts. The story I was told was my dad didn't like being home alone with me and would call my mom at work when things got hard.
After that my mom stayed home with me and my younger brother till I was in junior high, then some how I became the third parent (in trouble if house work, dinner and such wasn't done).
The time my mother stayed home with us wasn't great. I remember being very young and only ever playing by myself. She was usually on the phone or watching her "stories". She would often tell us how she didn't want to be home, that my dad didn't allow for her to work.
That's why it was tough for me to give up my career. And why I didn't right away, my dd was 18 months when I quit. But I stay involve with the kids and try to have fun with them.
My grandmother was visiting one day, she was holding the baby and my oldest asked if I would build a tower with her. I started helping her and my grandmother says is this what you do all day play with the kids? I couldn't believe she asked that, of course I do! Although looking back I guess I can understand why she would ask....
