December Spend-Less Challenge: Let's Fill Our Stockings with Pinched Pennies! - Page 2

We were out of eggs, so DH got himself and the kids breakfast sandwiches this morning, and we bought Cokes to go with dinner tonight (a rare treat, but still an extra $2). Otherwise I did pretty well at the grocery store, with lots of food for just $60 (including stocking up on GF bread with a sale and coupons, woohoo!). I also spent $75 on gas gift cards and $25 on a Christmas gift card for my grandmother (Olive Garden), and in exchange, I got $15 to spend next week at the same grocery store. The Olive Garden card I was going to buy anyway, and the gas gift cards will just fall under the gas budget, so that's a free $15! That will buy whatever extras I need to fill in the gaps around my freezer/pantry-based meals.

Tomorrow I have to pay for our monthly pottery class, and that's budgeted, but this is always a spending trigger for me, because the timing is weird and because there's an amazing bakery right down the street that we find it very hard to resist. DD8 reminded me tonight to pack snacks tomorrow, so I guess if the 8-year-old can control herself, I can too, LOL!

Turns out if you PLAN to stop by the minimart for snacks, I get a happy face!  But only because I didn't buy myself anything.  I did pick up a blaze-orange hat for me.  Wasn't planning on finding one, but I saw one for a good price ($8) and grabbed it.  I need it for my walks in the woods.

I felt proud of myself today! We were going to go to the Xmas Tree farm and get a tree today but my kids asked why we can't just get one from the yard. We live in a redwood forest and our landlords had cut down some redwoods, so the new little trees are sprouting up from the stumps. We picked one, it's a little skimpy but the kids love it & we save like $60 plus gas! Yay! We also made some salt dough ornaments today and an advent/solstice spiral for our table out of salt dough (you light a candle each day for advent). I've always wanted a wooden one but they are pricey, but the salt dough worked great:)

Did OK today, but it wasn't a no-spend. I bought more Christmas cards, more gift cards (cousin, grandmother, mail carrier, teacher friend), and scratch-off lottery tickets (grandmothers and DH's stocking). I did buy a few extra lottery tickets to round up to $35 (and scratched one myself), so that was unnecessary. Otherwise, we made it through our class and home without buying snacks (which I brought) or water (which I left on the stairs at home :eyesroll), so woohoo! I did need some things from BJ's (yogurt, cheese, bread, mayo, etc.), so spent $54, but that's in the budget. ETA: Ended buying a few more gifts for the gift tree in our local grocery store. There was a depressing number of request cards still on it. Usually those things are picked clean.

Yet, the bill for our (uninsured) trip to the ER came in.  The first bill came to $600.  That doesn't include the physician's charges, nor the follow-up.  Sigh.  Already pulled $2000 out of savings to cover Visa bill.  A big chunk was double-billed gymnastics and some warm clothes, but that is a bad beginning to the off-season.

Okay, back on track.  There are still a few Christmas gifts I need to buy.  Gonna get some good coffee for my brother and a scarf for my SIL.  My kids are done.  I went overboard on them (not compared to most people, but definitely compared to what I normally get them!)  Need to make a quilt for my sister with fabric I already have.  Still trying to decided if I'm going to buy anything for my kids' teachers.  I'm a teacher and I could care less if my students get me anything (and I work at a very low income school, so they usually don't).  I might just have them make something cute and make a card.  Anyway, gonna try to get the rest of my shopping done this weekend.  In exciting news, I got a new vacuum from my parents for my birthday--woohoo!!  (that and a pepper grinder, because my mom couldn't believe I didn't have one when they were here for Thanksgiving--LOL).  I also got money from my grandparents and I cashed a little bit of it but deposited most of it as I spent that amount, plus a whole lot more, on my credit card.  Paid off the credit card today (not gonna carry a balance into next month--yay!  I was a little worried with how reckless my spending was last week!)  Now I need to keep those no spend days going and not go into any stores!

We've been doing better on grocery spending, but now my pantry & freezer are getting low, so I have a feeling we will be going over our grocery budget this month!

I was so proud of myself for a no-spend day yesterday…then I blew it with dinner because I was so exhausted and feeling flu-ish when we got home from our crazy day *sigh* Today has been a quiet day, but it's also DH's birthday, so we'll probably get dinner out. I'll fill that in later.

That's the end of the Christmas junk spending.  The cost of Winter Faire went up just a little, not unexpected.  That included crafts and a play.

Thanks!  I have a lot of no spend days to make up after the insanity that happened at the end of last month ;)

I was gonna try to get my grocery shopping in yesterday, but we didn't have time, so I need to do that and get gas today.  Got my brother's Christmas present yesterday, still need to get something for my SIL (might be able to do that today).

Catching up.  Been a few ups and downs.  We are eating at home and keeping busy even with a big snow storm and days off of school.   But then, I bought an outrageously over-priced plane ticket for my grandmother's funeral.  The timing of her service is a bit tough being so close to Christmas.  All of the flights were expensive.  I chose the best I could and am leaving the kids at home with dh, so I only had to buy 1 ticket.

So, a few steps forward and a couple back.  This month, I am treading water a bit.  But come January and my money saving ninja skills come out in full force.
