I hear that. My months always seem to fall apart at the end.

I'm sorry for your loss :grouphug I hate that it costs so much money to fly when there's a family crisis like that. I wish there was another way. I'm so grateful that we just had to cover hotel and food last month when we had the loss in our family. That was hard enough. I can't imagine what it would have done to our finances to have had to buy four plane tickets.

Yep, bought dinner for DH's birthday last night and rented a movie via our Apple TV. It was just the two of us, though, and we did the Two for $20 deal. However, we ended up with a HUGE bag of corn chips and a big container of salsa from the appetizer, so I planned our dinner tonight around them and used them up!

Today I bought groceries, which were all in the grocery budget, but now I've maxed that out. I was near Whole Foods picking DD up, so I stocked up on frozen organic veggies and berries and the chicken tenders my youngest has been asking for, plus ingredients for this week's meal plan. I also stopped at our local grocery store to catch some deals and ended up with $30 or so of groceries for $6.50 :p From here on out, grocery spending will put us over budget, and we've used up most of the of the main course-type items in our freezer and pantry *sigh*.

I'm nearly done Christmas shopping--need a few more cards, gifts for for nieces and nephew (one family), and gift for MIL (NO CLUE what to get her). I'm going to try to knock that stuff out tonight so I can be FINISHED! That will all be over budget though, so technically today won't be a no-spend day.

Brought a potato dish to a potluck--dh had bought too much half-n-half (and non-organic), we had some extra milk and potatoes and stale but good bread.  Baked up potatoes in the oven in the milk with buttered bread crumbs on the top.  :yum  Pretty good for making due!

How about a photo book of your kids?  Shutterfly usually has good deals going on and I know Walgreens has all photo stuff 40% off right now!

Thanks for the idea, but she has tons of photo collages and picture frames and photo books already. My MIL is great, and I want to do something special for her, but she's hard to buy for! She lives very simply, and when she needs something, she buys it for herself. It makes Christmas and her birthday difficult!

Hi Melissel,

What about "consumables" (as my mother begs for!)  for your MIL?  My family very much enjoy getting food gifts (homemade or store bought).  This year homemade relish, sausage from local farm, homemade rolls....

or a donation to a cause that she would like to support?  just some ideas I had that might match her simple lifestyle....good luck!

Hm, that's interesting. We can't do consumables, because she's diabetic and eats very carefully, but a donation might work. I'll talk to DH about that tonight. Thanks!

One more Christmas gift down. And we ended up getting dinner in last night. I'm noticing a pattern: If we start school late in the day, we all poop out by the time dinnertime rolls around. Must stop that! The kids insisted on Moe's though, so they paid for their own, and DH ate at home when he came home late. So I only had to pay for myself, pretty much.

I really, really want to finish Christmas shopping today...

Thanks Melissel.  Yes, dealing with a death puts everything on hold for a while.  I have money to pay for the ticket thankfully and I can stay with family when I get there.   I am thankful I had the opportunity last June to see my grandmother before she became bed ridden.  She lived a long, wonderful life, so really this isn't a sad time.

Day 5 of snowmaggedon.  No, not really, but our new town is completely unprepared for 6 inches of snow and the town is still shut down.  Another snow day here.  I am running out of ways to keep my kiddos happy!   We have sledded again and again and been to the library and the pool and built towers and race tracks and baked and made art and watched way too many movies.  I am determined to make today a no-spend day.

The last two days were no-spend days, but today we had a long-awaited date to take youngest DD and her little friends to see Frozen and have dinner at the theater, so that was a big expense. I told her next time we do movies/pizza/popcorn/hot cocoa at home! But there was a specific reason for this outing, so it's OK.

Still not done with Christmas shopping, let alone wrapping/packing/mailing... hide.gif
