Keeping baby #2 safe in a house with a curious toddler

Hi Mamas,

I've got a very active, very curious 2 year old who loves his 2 month old baby brother like crazy. DS2 is still tiny and happiest in my arms, but a time will come when he'll want to be out of my arms a little more (and when I'll want that, too.) Right now I wear him most of the time, but I'm thinking ahead to that time when that won't be the case.

I never used a playpen with DS1, but I'm thinking about it now. But I'm terrified that DS1 will try to climb in and pull the whole thing over. Apparently I did something similar with my little sister in a bassinet when I was 2.

Any of you have a new baby with a curious, toddler sibling? How do you keep the littlest one safe?

x-posting to life with a baby.

Thanks for any ideas!

We've just got just the one but I was 2.5 when my sister was born and used to climb in her playpen all the time, no one ever got hurt :wink  Heck that was in the dropside crib days and I helped her to escape a few times from that as well as pushing a little tikes slide up to her changing table for her to slide off lol!!  You could always try and anchor the playpen to the floor but I'm inclined to think they don't tip very easy, I mean my 30lb 2yo has yet to tip one over - she's got one at both grandparent's houses for naps and she's never knocked either over when she hangs in, out, or on them. Other than supervision, have a little chat with DS1 about how to act around the playpen when baby brother is in it, maybe practice with stuffies for now.
