Whatcha Eating? - Page 3

On Monday my family is starting 30 days of Raw.  We were raw for almost a year when I got pregnant with my last.  I lasted for a while, but moved 3 times in that pregnancy, and DH didn't have a job, and so we couldn't afford it, and I got far too lazy to do it.  This time, for some reason, I feel totally motivated.  I went shopping this evening for produce, and will head to the Raw Food store tomorrow to buy the nuts and seeds and other things I can only get there, and on we will go.  Last time we started with 30 days as well, and continued on for almost a year. I'm being realistic, and know that I may have to supplement if I feel the need for more, but am excited to get more healthy.

Johanna- what do you do when you stop brewing water kefir? I've heard that the grains can starve if they're left in the same water too long, even in the fridge. I've been trying really hard to get myself to keep drinking it, but I just can't do it! I'm hoping that these new lids I picked up will help though (I brew in canning jars and am always very careful to not touch the kefir to the metal, but ever since I got pregnant all I can taste in my kefir is metal).

Luckily, raw milk has really been hitting the spot lately, so I'm not completely devoid of my bacteria goodness. :-)

I put mine in the fridge. My friend/neighbor will find someone to take the grains.

Been struggling with probiotic rich stuff. Might end up taking a pill. Meh.

Sauerkraut has been hitting the spot for me!

After reading about several of you making smoothies, I was inspired to give that a try this morning.  It was SO good!

Mine was basic - strawberries, blueberries, apple, banana, walnuts, yogurt and fresh-squeezed OJ.  The coldness was perfect for soothing my queasy stomach.  I will definitely be putting this in the rotation!

^^^i've been CRAVING smoothies!

i've been doing fruit and romaine lettuce, (getting PLENTY of that folate in!) and it's a nice smooth, not too green flavor.  i can't do dairy like yogurt, and it's been so cold for the last 2 days i've been doing coconut milk hot drinks.  not as healthy as fruit, but plenty of calories to carry me through the day.

and the romaine/fruit blend has been a blessing for any onset of queasiness.

getting more frozen fruit (i only had local blueberries a friend gifted me, and peaches i put away from our tree this summer.  need MANGO.  and strawberries, and those kinds of goodness!!!) after some of the snow fades away.....

Piratemere- i was a raw foodist for most of my first pregnancy and my 3rd (easier since she was a summer pregnancy, Nov baby.)  i love it. but have settled into a paleo/traditional foods diet.  grass-fed beef and pork, occasional organic chicken, bone stocks, raw foods, fermented foods, loads of greens and veggies.  lower on the carb front just b/c i don't feel good on much other than potatoes a couple times a week.  during certain cravings, daily!!!  do what you can and what feels good!  i found first and 3rd trimesters i LOVE raw foods- they digest so much cleaner and faster.  but 2nd trimester, i need more heavy foods for a while.  we moved to New England in the midst of that, and i earned a new respect for soup (not raw) in the winter!!!  but always keep my raw foods a priority, even if it's not ALL i'm eating.

I tend to go with spinach in my smoothies if adding green.  I've never tried romaine... I bet that adds good texture like an apple does.  Will have to give that a whirl!

What do you do with hot coconut milk?  Just plain or doctored?

For the 2 weeks after ovulation (before BFP) I had really strong distinct cravings for almond milk and to a lesser degree, coconut milk.  I drank them like crazy, and then it just stopped.  No desire at all now.  I'm a heavy dairy gal (my parents had a small dairy farm when I was young) so it's everywhere in my diet.  We stick to the grass-fed as much as possible.

We did go vegan for 6 months several years ago.  It worked fine while we lived in a city near decent produce, but then we moved to the country and good produce was very hard to come by and the nearest whole foods (or anything similar) was about 90 mins away.  We traveled a lot so growing things wasn't really practical either - especially since we knew our stay there was temporary (about 2 years).  Obviously, we reverted!

i doctor the coconut milk.  peppermint cocoa, mocha, cinnamon vanilla, whatever i want!!!  i need a better source of dairy- like jersey milk.  i can only do dairy when there's extra fat added- cream to milk, egg yolks, coconut oil, etc.  i think it slows it down so i can digest the lactose better.  otherwise a glass of milk is painful and leads to situations that require TMI to describe!!!

i have never been able to be vegan (except for fasting seasons).  my body craves animal products.  i make quality a priority, and don't eat as much of them as most people i know (due to quality and sourcing and price!) but don't feel right w/out them.  i can do raw foods, but still need some raw cheese, and raw egg yolks in dressings and craved sashimi when i was 100% raw foods!  i used to try and be smarter than my body, but i'm no longer trying that anymore!

I forget that not everyone gets the same variety of fresh produce as we get in Florida in the dead of winter! I crave fruit all the time, and just picked up some amazing peaches! :eat

Have any of you girls noticed your cravings change? I wanted everything vinegary two weeks ago, but when I tried to eat a veggie sandwich with oil and vinegar on top today, I almost gagged. I've become much more particular the last few days, and I found the nausea to be worse and I'm eating MUCH less than usual. I'm so ready for second trimester!

Going with the whatever body will tolerate rule for now. Cola cravings, trying to limit myself.

pudlenka, exactly. I know my choices aren't the best right now but...it is what it is.

Ten weeks today! I had canned peaches and spaghettios. So bad, I know...because they're canned but I just have to eat what I can eat early pregnancy. Also been eating sub sandwiches that I make with cheese, lettuce and mayo, pasta with alfredo sauce, apples, yogurt, been craving donuts...

Mmm...donuts...:yum  Been craving cherries lately - of all things! Fruit in general staves off the nausea. Have a mad craving for macaroni & cheese, chicken tenders & canned green beans today!! Something about "kid" food is SO appealing right now.

ha!  going to floriday in Feb and totally plotting on living on fruit!!!

smoked salmon and spinach omelets, wings. grapefruit.  ice cream. pickles (so far not together). yes on vinegar and yes on saltier foods.

hot and sour soup and egg drop soup are always something i like.

picked up a jar of peanut people (or whatever their name is) chocolate peanut butter, and that by the spoonful is my favorite snack.

making raw flax crackers for my husband, and those sound okay, but so far not enough to eat them..... i want FRUIT.  bananas, pineapple, grapefruit, lemons, limes, mangoes, pretty much any ripe sweet fruit i'd totally go for..... i need to get some frozen ones b/c i can't get any good fresh ones....

I have a smoothie in the morning with frozen mango, strawberries, pineapple and peaches, and in the afternoon I crave fresh juice, so I've been doing 1 gala apple, 1 green apple and a slice of honeydew- so good! Eat up while you're down here! :)

I struggle with cooking. Most of the time it's juat me and my kitchen is smaller than my bathroom. I try to go with very easy and as healthy as possible. Hoping to re-sign up for our produce box soon.

Tonight? Once again bacon and asparagus.

You healthy people make me feel so guilty!

Today, I lived on crackers, pop tarts, bagels, a couple pieces of hard candy so I could stop eating yet not throw up, some chicken nuggets, a deviled egg, some raw broccoli, hot chocolate (homemade at least), and stew for supper.  And orange juice.  I'm so going to gain a million pounds again.  :/  I need a chef!!!!

The problem is that I don't want to eat anything, and thinking about food makes me feel so sick.  Dh is being really great this time to not offer suggestions.  So, anything that I can pop in my mouth without thinking about it is fair game.  This morning, I was underprepared, and the kids needed a lot of attention.  So, later in the day, I had the eggs boiled and peeled, and I remembered the broccoli and ate that.

And that whole spaghetti-o's thing?  SO tempted to buy some.  I had to steel myself to walk past the mac and cheese the other day.  By the way, all that junk that is available is because of DH.  I bought apples and carrots and almond butter.  He went to the store and brought back bags of diabetes.  Totally not kidding...off brand captain crunch with marshmallows!  He was trying to make things easier for me, and he's right, it does...BUT, once all that junk goes down the hatch, we've got other issues, lol.  We feel SO much better if we eat Paleo.  But, yeah.  Either we eat raw, or I spend HOURS in the kitchen each day, and I can't think about food that much right now.  I have visions of teaching the older three how to prepare a days' worth of food.  That would be 3 days down where I don't have to think about it.  I'll have to be really creative with my almost 5yo, but she LOVES working in the kitchen, and is pretty capable.  She can scramble eggs (if someone else breaks them), and I'm thinking she could load a crockpot with sliced peppers, carrots, tomatoes, pre-browned ground beef, and pre-mixed spices.

Hmmm...I really need to get on that.

The only reason I can't give in to my worse cravings is how incredibly awfully horrible I feel if I have gluten.  It cuts out pretty much ALL fast food.  It is so not worth it.

My "bad" options typically only can include Trader Joe's frozen foods.  Sugar has been unappealing but a couple times now I downed entire containers of artichoke and jalapeno dip.  Can't be too healthy.

I retried water kefir and I think it's okay now.  Must have been a phase.  I'll try to brew again, I think.  Need to get probiotics in me somehow.
