Anyone else worried about chemicals?
I am always worried about chemicals. I'm a freak about eating organic and I am making SURE to eat a very clean high raw primal diet right now. I have food aversion so it's not easy but easier then it would be if I was really sick. Nausea usually kicks in about 6-8 weeks for me so we'll see how I do then.
I don't use household cleaner or any product which comes in a plastic container. I live on an ecovillage off the grid in Hawaii in the middle of nowhere so it's relatively easy to avoid all that stuff.
We usually eat pretty much all organic or local small-scale farm at home but these days I am craving junk and prepared meals, which usually means not organic. At work I always cave and eat whatever's in the hot lunch line, which is terrible because it's Sodexo and I'm sure it's all GMO factory-farmed. But whatever organic stuff I bring usually pales besides the full turkey dinner or some such that's in the hot entree line. I need better willpower.
I don't use any personal care products besides some natural shampoo, so I'm doing well there. And we replaced our couch, mattress and futon (which constitutes all our upholstered furniture, we're minimalists) with flame-retardant-free wool versions last year. So...I think I'm doing okay.
Wow, that Hawaii set-up sounds fantastic!!
i'm not gonna do anything differently, but have already shifted our diet to mostly organic/local. no products (dish soap and shampoo and conditioner for hubby) but clean w/ baking soda and vinegar, live near an organic farm, eat traditional foods/clean, make my own belly balm, and pretty much rely on coconut oil for many many purposes.
we don't have plastic in the house except for toys/devices. kids and us use all glass/pottery dishes, cook on old cast iron, stainless steel, use a water purifier (had bad water experiences), and while all our furniture is hand-me-down, our mattress is organic cotton/wool/natural latex.
due to my extreme sensitivity to gluten, the only sort of cheating i can do is sugar. like gluten-free baked goods made at home. so minimal GMO b/c i don't use grains, veggie oils, or any food products. w/ 5 kiddos, i cook everything from scratch every day. and sometimes (like yesterday) i might eat a dozen and a half almond flour spice cookies. and be HUGE. but i really really try when pregnant to eat my greens, stocks, protein, and fresh fruit instead of sweets.
we'll see what happens if food aversions kick in soon. which usually my carb cravings skyrocket and my interest in greens is NIL for about 6 weeks. then usually juice (already thinking ahead for that, if i start the day w/ 4-5 leaves kale, 1 cucumber, 3 leaves romaine, 2 stalks celery and 1 green apple, i'm pretty good about eating well the rest of the day) but need to prepare and make myself do it!!!
Yes, we eat only local/pastured meat (once my stupid morning sickness calms down a bit!), avoid dirty dozen, I switched to olive oil shampoo, I clean with vinegar and other all-natural products, I don't get air fresheners, I don't get my nails done, I don't inhale horrible fumes, I don't use cosmetics or other skin products. I do use a moisturizer and a face wash that have chemicals, but are "mild" versions only b/c I have horrendous acne if I do not. I don't change the cat litter...dunno...lots of things.
That's about all I can think of.
