Spending Freeze!: January Spend-Less Challenge - Page 6

SweetSilver- you just reminded me to check my library due dates! I am so bad about it & can check & renew online, but I still mess up! The fines are $1 a day each book with no grace period, so it adds up sooo fast! Everyone, check your due dates!

I bought some homeschooling curriculum on ebay that I have been wanting for next year (ds1 will be in 3rd). It was not planned, I got such a good price, but it's still a lot of money! Hopefully it will be worth it! We budget some money for 'misc spending', like oil changes, clothing, household stuff, so it still fit in our budget technically.

Nice mellow weekend and now I need to gear up for a busy school week.  Headed to the grocery store.  My fridge is so empty it blinds me when I open it.

Holy moly, that's crazy!!!! For awhile I was making a note in my calendar every week to check my library account. It wasn't on the due dates, because we often had things due on all different dates--1-week movies, 2-week books, 3-week books, stuff that was renewed while other stuff wasn't, etc. Too much to keep track of! But it reminded me to at least look at my account and renew or return if necessary. I got out of the habit, though, and I need to get back to it. This last round of fines was the highest I think it's ever been. It's not OK duh.gif

I've been sticking to my food budget, but that's still quite high, and I haven't been able to fit in the $21 Challenge week yet. Maybe next week!

Pluses - used gift cards and coupon codes for a couple of purchases/outings to reduce price, have been returning library books on time (:-D) and no parking tickets lately (fingers crossed), put an extra $300 in savings from a part-time gig I have.

Minuses - haven't reduced food bill, had unexpected clothing purchase (boots for DH, snow pants for me - should have been predictable, seeing as how we're in the Midwest (!), but these were things we had done w/out until this winter), DH signed up DD2 for an activity (not really a minus, more like unplanned for Jan.)

Neutral/necessary expenses - new computer for work (from business funds - will be a tax deduction in 2014), haircuts for DD1 and me.

This week: I got a couple of things from the store this morning, so I should be good for lunches and after-school snacks. I also meal-planned for this week, so dinners should be taken care of. Aiming for the next 2-3 days to be no-spend - we get another paycheck Weds. and the same day student loan payment comes out.

Spent $157 on groceries, which leaves us $150 for the rest of the month. That should last us, since it would really only be for the main course parts of the meals (and we have a few family gatherings and parties tucked in there where we'll be having dinner out), but I have a few more things to buy for a slumber party, so that may put a dent in it. We haven't been eating out a lot though, so there may also be some room in the "outside food" budget that we can use for groceries as well. Boy, that would be a switch! :p

I'm so proud of myself! I ended up unexpectedly having to do 5-6 hours of frantic work today to beat a deadline, and I texted DH that I was going to have to do a takeout dinner of some kind, which I really wasn't happy about. While I was waiting for him to reply, I realized that I'd bought frozen pizzas at BJ's yesterday for the kids, and we had plenty of eggs and salad makings for DH and me. The kids made their own pizza and salad for dinner while I worked, I picked at some pepper jack cheese that I love, and DH made himself scrambled eggs when he got home. We saved dinner!!! It would probably have cost us about $40 to order in--instead we had a $5 pizza and $4 worth of eggs, cheese, and ham :joy And it's a good thing too, because I need to get $50 worth of ice cream, oreos, and Dominoes pizza this weekend for this crazy sleepover uhoh3.gif I have to save every penny I can!

Hi! I know I'm awfully late to the game but I was hoping you mamas wouldn't mind if I joined you!

Intro: I'm a pt working mom (weekends only) of 3 kids 8,6, and 2. Dh works off to earn a living usually 7/7 but lots of work over to give us extra money. They've cut this down drastically the last few months so he hasn't been able to work over since Oct! Not a big deal usually but with Christmas and tons of copays/medical bills racking up it's been a hit. We had a normal annuals for the kids but dd has also been seeing a specialist and undergoing procedures and testing for celiac, allergies, and other things plus her meds and the two littles got the flu which was $200 on meds!

Current issue: Dh has been working toward getting a promotion/job transfer that would more than double his income. He went back to see the guy last week and went for his physical but failed it for high bp. Another doc visit and meds but he went back today and passed. He spoke with the new boss again, there's a spot for him now, and he was signed up for the classes starting Mon!! This is amazing and will be great for us but this means he is in unpaid classes for 2 weeks then he leaves out ??? and we don't know when he'll get his first check after that. This means the money we have right now is it. I don't know when he will get paid again and it can be anywhere from 2 weeks to 8 weeks away. I need to pinch every penny to make the money we have right now last us for potentially two months for all expenses including bills! This definitely means NO SPEND! I can't afford to spend a dime that isn't necessary right now. I'm even considering rescheduling the kids dentists appts this afternoon because of gas costs and copays. :(

No Spend: :wink

Welcome! That is definitely a challenging situation, but I'm glad his longer-term prospects are improved by it. This is a good place for helping face just that kind of challenge. I can't tell you how often I've stopped myself from spending "just a few" dollars by the thought that I have to report it here if I do it.

Good luck!

OMG, can these girls eat! We spent $50 on pizza last night (plus a bowl of little tomatoes and a whole head of cauliflower with dip!) and I was hoping we'd have some left for picking at today, but no, it was gone last night. The Oreos are gone, but we have lots of ice cream left (unfortunately for my pants size :yum).  Then a dozen and a half eggs and a quadrupled batch of pancakes this morning, and there was a single lonely pancake left. And I still need to feed them something before they get picked up. I can't imagine having to feed a big family every day!

I did buy snack and ate a couple of tacos out, but I'm trying to make healthier choices.  Had 2 fish tacos instead of the (surprisingly decent) minimart pizza.  We bought organic juice on sale instead of pop or non-organic juice at the taco place.  Bought org. whole wheat crackers and resisted cookies or chips.  The girls did buy a small bag of chips from their snack fund.  I spent a little more money, but there is food leftover, and it's relatively nutritious.

We started up the snack fund again.  The girls get $10 each to spend on candy and snacks through the week.  At the end, the leftover money (if any) is put in the Family Fun Fund for open swim trips and things like that.  I'm just trying not to buy any snacks for myself.  Yesterday they chose to buy extra Clif bars and an ice soymilk from the coffee stand.

Jan. 16: :o Light bill payment and a little grocery spend. I hauled stuff to donation today so was out in town but gave dd a lunchable and juice instead of eating out and I waited til we got home. That's a big change for me so I'm glad.

Dh called from work today and found out that he needs approval from his current boss's supervisor before he can be transferred. He's been working towards this for months and this is the first we've heard about it. He talked with the guy today and the supervisor is suppose to contact the potential new boss tomorrow. I don't see why he'd deny it unless he just wanted to be a jerk but we'll see. I'm surprisingly not upset but I hope I wasn't thinking things were working out for nothing... On the up side if he doesn't get the transfer he does at least still have his job and I'll know what money is going to look like for some time although we'll be back to reassessing our life with job and living situation. :(
