looking for a smarter garden planner

I want a planner that can spit out a plan based on what I want to grow instead of just letting me make pretty pictures.  I find this part so overwhelming and I want to do companion planting etc.  We have pretty poor soil under a layer of wonderful compost we built last year.  We live on the edge of the sand dunes in Michigan, so building soil is a feat here.  I of course also want a lot of variety. Is there a program where I can just plug in a list and have it figure that all out for me?

Funny with the thread title you chose, but check out Smart Gardener. It's completely free, totally user friendly and is an actual planning tool. I've been using it for years and love it.

I just have to say thanks for the smart gardener website rec. I just wasted the entire afternoon planning my garden for the spring and summer! Its so fun and user friendly. Dh has been saying that we have more room in our garden than we realize, and this planner showed us where, allowing me to move things around as I wanted. We're adding a couple extras this summer to our existing garden bed. So fun!

Awesome - glad it worked out for you! I personally love it, and I can't wait to get in there and start planning our garden too. OMG, it's January - I need to get the tomatoes started next month! Guess I need to get in there soon.
