When Do You Put Away Christmas Stuff?

Just curious about how long after Christmas people leave their Christmas decorations up. We're taking ours down the Saturday after New Year's. The season just seemed so short this year, and I want to have the sparkle and glitz up on New Year's Eve!

We usually take it down just after the new year. The tree is already down (it was starting to get dry and sad looking), everything else will come down next weekend.

I used to take decorations down day after New Year's, then day after Three Kings.  Now I wait until after winter break, usually around MLK here in the States.  The kids like them, so we leave them up longer.  Our lights are small, clear ones swagged over the curtain rods, and they stay up all year.  There are dark, grim days in March when spring and daylight seem as though they'll never come, and I'll light them a couple of times to get through winter's home stretch.

Our stuff is down except the outdoor lights.  We have a big New Year's gig here so we want the tree put away for space.  This year I just put everything away because I had the boxes out already.

I put the Christmas decorations up on the day after Thanksgiving, and I take them down on New Year's Day.

I'm trying to make it until New Year's Day. I would like to have the space back. But my fridge looks like a snowman, and I'll leave that alone for a while.

I take mine down around Epiphany (January 6). Usually it's the weekend after.

Yup, Epiphany (Jan 6th) as well. I usually put them up in the second week of Advent, but when the kids leave home - I think I may become more "liturgically correct" & put them up on X-mas eve.

I'm guilty of being commercially correct and put things up day after Thanksgiving.  Love the decorations.  Will not bow to the trend approaching Halloween, though.

Never before Epiphany. We've actually postponed celebrating until Jan 5th so we could enjoy Christmas without the stress of family obligations, cleaning for company, etc. We get the decorations up right before Christmas. And some years we've had decorations still knocking around right before Easter and put them away while bringing Easter things out.

We don't get our tree until the first weekend in December, and leave it up until a day or two after New Year's Day.

Historically, I keep it up until Epiphany (this is a cultural/family thing, as I'm not Christian, and wasn't raised in a Christian home). We'll be taking the tree down a little early this year, as the various charity tree chipping operations are all happening this weekend. We'll probably take it down on Saturday and have it chipped on Sunday.

I think we'll leave the other indoor decorations (some garlands and large ornaments hanging from the ceiling) up until Epiphany...and may leave the outdoor lights a bit longer. The night comes pretty early here at this time of year, and some lights keep the darkness from being overwhelming.

No particular date, just whenever we get around to it. This year I'm waiting to score some cheap airtight storage containers. Stinkbugs infiltrated the attic this year so decorating was punctuated with bloodcurdling screams every time a kid reached into a box and found one. Gonna try to skip that next year, thankyouverymuch!

Go to Target right now! The red/green storage totes are 70% off - our Target still had some of yesterday, and I think they were ringing up at $5 for the big ones. Smaller plastic ornament cases and wreath bags, etc. are all 70% off too.

Today! Probably tomorrow, too. Unfortunately taking them down doesn't seem nearly as fun for the kids. I'm hoping to rope them into helping me a little bit, though.

Last year we made up a fun way for taking decorations down. We pretend to be the Grinch, and we sneak around the house saying, "He took the garlands, the angels, the stockings! Why, that nasty old Grinch even took the red candles!" as we "stuff" everything back into the containers. The kids think it's hilarious. orngbiggrin.gif

Sounds like early January is the general consensus! :-) I've got the declutter/clean/organize bug that I get every January. After so much everything over the holidays, I want crisp and clean and calm. I took down all of the Christmas stuff today except for the tree. The tree will come down tomorrow and then I'm going to vacuum the carpets and furniture, and clean and mop the kitchen floors.

We're doing it tomorrow!
