I'm sorry all, but I need to rant.
Everywhere I turn, I encounter people who think people like me are nuts, stupid, ignorant or all of the above for my choices not to vax. I am not a mother yet but I choose to forego vaccines for myself. When I do have kids, I will be seriously considering not letting them have any. Right now I am at a standoff with my s.o. on the pertussis thing and to be honest I don't want to get pregnant until we agree on something 100% as far as that goes. But anyway, I digress.
The media, my friends, even my family seem like they are on some sort of witch-hunt when it comes to this. This topic is why I joined this website in the first place. What I have begun to really wonder is why SHOULD we need any reason at all not to vax? Don't get me wrong, I have reasons not to and valid ones at that. But I am sure you all are familiar with people who simply refuse to believe that there could be anything wrong with vaccines. So why can I not say to them that it is my choice not to? Because I DON'T WANT TO??? Seriously, it's putting something serious in YOUR body or that of your offspring. Why can we simply choose not to do it and leave it at that? Why do we have to constantly explain our reasoning only to be called radical or crazy? Do we vilify vegans or vegetarians because they choose not to put animal products into their bodies? If I find out someone doesn't eat meat, I for one don't start lecturing them on why it is totally safe to do so and that they are stupid for choosing not to. So why should these pro-vaxxers be able to treat us like a bunch of crazies for making choices about what we do or don't put into our bodies?
I have come to the point where if I encounter someone trying to rebut or defend the case against vaccines, I just shut down and leave the situation. I know there are those out there who just will not hear a bad word said against them. But I think one of these days I'm just going to stop giving them my reasons and start telling them that I don't do it because it's MY choice and there's not a darn thing they can say or do to change that.
