January NO SWEETS Challenge

Thread Starter

I am trying so hard not to eats sweets, and I have very little support around me, so I thought I would start a thread like the monthly "No Spend" challenge in the Frugality Forum.  If you want to join, please say something about your family and why you want to eat no sweets (or cut down on sweets).  We will keep a list of how we are doing and what we resisted.

We are two working parents and two dds (7 yo and 9 yo).  Dh does the shopping and always seems to buy and/or prepare sweets.  My kids are absolutely addicted.  I think sugar has no nutritional value and is detrimental to good health, so I am trying to cut it out.

I do pretty well with sweets, but I couldn't leave your thread uncommented because I am doing a couple of other challenges of my own this month.

WHOO HOO! You're doing great! Keep on truckin'!

I don't browse the threads as often as I used to, but I will totally join your challenge!! :)

I've always tried to eat real foods (whole grains, no processed stuff, no white sugar) since having kids (4 - ages 2, 4, 6, 8), but that totally slipped since the holidays.  There are just so many fun - and sugar - related things to do around the holidays and it was BAD....  My health totally nose-dived (I wasn't sick, just wasn't well, iykwim).  Not sure if it was because I used to eat so healthy before and knew what good health was, or what... but....

I cleaned out my pantry and we're back to real foods... but I'm doing a cleanse from the book clean so I'm off all forms of sugar -- which was hard the first few days...It's funny... but I don't want the sugar sweets anymore (I'm on day 6) :)  My cravings have gone from crap to real food that I'll have once my 3 week cleanse is over...  although the weekends can be hard.  We do sunday dinners with my family...and if they stick with boring old desserts I'll be fine... but last week they asked ME to make chocolate mousse...and well, i did have some of that. on top of meringues. with whipped cream and raspberries...oh my!  (I'm supposed to be supporting here so I"ll stop now...  but, thats not easy or quick to make which is a good thing...

Stay strong ssantos...  It is SO WORTH IT!! :)

I don't know why, but I made honeyed/sugared almonds with the kids...(part of an A snack...  ).  I thought I made just enough for the kids but there are a bunch left over.  They're looking at me....  I WILL resist them....

Ragana and crazytownmama, thanks so much for the support.  I was feeling a bit lonely.  I am still resisting, and I can tell that my cravings have gone down (I still think about chocolate sometimes).

Is there going to be a february challenge? I sooooo need to join this! Lol! I'm a compulsive eater when it comes to sweets and this is what is keeping me from losing more weight.

By the way, is Santos your last name? Are you brazilian?

Oh, and congrats on the good job so far!

No wonder people have a hard time losing weight!  This is everything I had to resist for the month of January, and I have to say it got easier and easier.  I was just going to do this for the month (makes it easier to give yourself a time limit), but now, I really don't crave anything.  I saved a piece of lemon cake and a box of chocolates for today (Feb 1st).  The lemon cake wasn't that great and the two chocolates I ate made me a little sick to my stomach.  For sweets, my new plan is only to eat ones that are homemade, free, and look absolutely delicious.  I don't think anything that I was offered this month was made from scratch, so I am thinking it should not be too hard to stick to this plan.

Marina Brasil and Nazsmum, I am not going to do a February challenge for sweets because I accomplished my goal.  I encourage you guys to try it.  It worked for me.  Each month this year I am going to try to cut out an unhealthy/unsustainable/animal cruelty food group.  For February, I am going to do processed meats.  Maybe I will start a No sugar/dairy/meat/fill-in-the-blank February Challenge.  That way people can say what they are specifically trying to cut out.

Thanks for the support and good luck to everyone!
