2014 Vegetable Gardening

Yes, it's four days into the new year and I've got the bug - MUST GARDEN NOW! And it's currently blizzarding outside. Anyone get any seed catalogs yet? I haven't, to my great despair, but I ordered the Pinetree catalog the other day and I'm just itching for it to arrive!

I feel ya.  I was flipping through my gardening books on Christmas day :)

I just got my first catalog. This will be my first year gardening so I am excited and a bit overwhelmed all at once!

That's awesome! What kind of garden are you planning?

The advice I've gotten thus far is to start with raised beds and not go too crazy my first year. I was thinking of starting with 5 different veggies we use often.

You definitely got good advice. And really think about your sun exposure and access to water - you want at least 6 hours of sunlight per day, and ideally your hose will reach your garden site - lugging buckets of water every two days at the height of season will burn you out quickly!

Thank you for the tips! I appreciate all the helpful advice.

I got my seed order the other day; I'm so excited. And I've got the seed starting tray set up in the kitchen, though it'll be another month before I can reasonably plant anything, but I couldn't help myself.

I need to get my order in! For My birthday my MIL got me a seed starting tray, heat lamp & blanket. (She' the best!) I really need to buckle down & order my seeds, though, like you, Kitchensqueen, I won't be able to plant anything for a while. I also desperately need to harvest some worm compost! Poor worms need new bedding & soon enough I'll be able to use the dark gold they've been making!

Well, we've got fairly good-sized seedlings started for three varieties of tomato, two varieties of pepper, pumpkins and peas. The Swiss chard has just come up. And I got email notification that my order of seed potatoes has shipped.

And there is no snow on the ground and I left the house without even a jacket this evening to go to yoga! Dare I say that winter is over and gardening is in full swing?

What's everyone else got going on?
