How early would you introduce formal math to a kid who might really like it? - Page 2

Hi Erin ... We've been taking out the pages and slipping then into a page protector so E can use dry erase markers. I don't know if this is ideal, because she sometimes wipes off the work she just did, but she seems to prefer it to 'messing' up when she tries to fit the numbers into the box. Like you, I'm not into the workbooks at all, but she sometimes chooses those to work on. I had hopes (with the page protector) that we could use the pages for H too, but E is pretty keen on doing them herself, once she practices with the dry-erase marker a couple of times.
So far, she's more interested in the rods, which I have way more fun with, and am perhaps more enthusiastic about.
With the rods, she's been exploring adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing in a really holistic way, or so it seems to me. I like that she's getting to know each value she plays with in and out, without the restrictions of so-called 'age-appropriate curriculum.'
She was getting a bit anxious about the workbooks (you know how E is ...), so I didn't bring them with us for our 5 weeks in Mexico.
We've been using the rods exclusively, and she's been dictating her equations to me. That's been great!

The idea of separating the visualizations/games from the books is a good one. Last night I got out the rods and started fooling around with them, and my son came over and invented a mathy sort of game with dice and the rods that he was super excited to play for a long time. And then decided to put them all away in multiples of ten.

I don't have any page protectors, but that might be an especially good idea for my 3yo, who would absolutely love to do something exactly the same as big brother is doing, but is nowhere near ready to do any more math than counting.
