how late can an hpt continue to be negative?

With my prior pregnancies I got a positive right away, right when my period was due.

Recently, I had some spotting about 12 days ago. Lasted a day and I thought af was coming and she didn't. Last couple days I've had some mild cramping and cm like af should be here. I've also been a little more tired than usua, but perhaps my body is finally starting to wear down bc my 2.5yo dd still wakes me up at night to nurse! (That's another topic I've been meaning to post on mothering! ) I've been feeling all stuffy and keep getting this flushed feeling in my face, but perhaps it's a little cold too. I just got my period back about 3 or 4 cycles ago and they've been pretty punctual, so perhaps af is just late or I missed a cycle this month? I tested today it was negative. Just wondering what's going on, and if I'm not pregnant than what would cause the cramping and cm production down there?

My cycles can be pretty unpredictable when I am nursing. So, it could just be that you are tired or whatever.

I do have a friend that never got a positive hpt with her second child.
