A mysterious polio-like syndrome has affected as many as 25 California children, leaving them with paralyzed limbs and little hope of recovery.

"What's we're seeing now is bad. The best-case scenario is complete loss of one limb, the worst is all four limbs, with respiratory insufficiency, as well. It's like the old polio," said Keith Van Haren, a pediatric neurologist at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif.

I was coming to post this also. I wonder if it could be linked to some new pesticide? Like DDT?

I saw a quick blurb on it. Do we know underlying conditions and meds given? Are they close to farms?

Also, since it is the same family of viruses, I wonder if some strains grow more virulent over time taking the place of polio subtypes?

There is some really great critical thinking skills being utilized in the comments. Despite the fact that the article specifically states that this is *NOT* polio and that whatever it is has *NO* vaccine, they are trying to blame it on non-vaxxers. :dizzy

Didn't you know, the spread of norovirus and any other disease is all the non vaxer's fault! ;)

But yeah reading comprehension is lacking haha. They keep commenting how the kids probably weren't vaccinated and it's all their fault. Oh oh. Next: child injured in car crash. If child had been vaccinated, injury wouldn't have occurred. Same logic.....

I am going to assume the victims of this paralysis are fully vaccinated, otherwise, that would have been in the first sentence and in the title.

The first case identified was in Berkeley, not far from Oakland - a very urban area.

The last paragraph is very telling - this is my point in so many unreported cases of so-called "vaccine preventable diseases" ...

Quote:
"The younger doctors have just never seen polio," she said. "Maybe collaborating between the younger generation and the older generation who actually went through polio will help us catch more cases."
Think -
Is the Sister Kenney Institute in MN still is open or is there some actively trained personnel around?

Is this condition - which resembles bulbar polio - occurring in children who have had their tonsils removed?... and remember, if we were living in the early 1950s, this would have been diagnosed as "polio".

And were any of the afflicted near a person who just returned from India, Pakistan, or Afghanistan near a LOPV distribution center?

Too many questions, no answers.

Well obviously they won't call it polio because vaccination has wiped that out! So there's no way that these vaxxed kids could possibly have a disease which modern medicine has eliminated, and therefore, we must rename it as something new and terrifying and send vaccine manufacturers rushing to come up with a new source of protection!! Why do people buy this crap?! Have we really been so brainwashed that we can't take a step back, put on our thinking caps and say "hey, wait a minute, something doesn't look right here". To not even look for older docs who've experienced it first hand is just a huge slap in the face to the massive amount of knowledge that will die with these people rather than be passed on.

Well it's just in the nature of the disease infested, plague spreading, suck pumps of society that we non-vaxxers are, riding on the coattails of immunity from the vaxxers to protect us all....even when vaccinations don't exist! hammer.gif

They did test them for polio, and it's not polio. The thing that struck me most about the articles were that they said people shouldn't worry because it's very rare. But imagine if there were 25 cases of polio in California. Would they be saying the same thing?

why is 25 OK in this case but when we get 1 or GASP! 2 measles we go nuclear? 25 whopping cough cases and we are almost ready to burn non-vaccers at the stake! :irked

Hasn't their been a resurgence of tonsillectomies to treat ADD?

... and I just heard on the radio news that this has been going on since 2012 - two years! Thank you for letting us know in a timely manner.

I remember reading that homeopathy can cure polio along with some chiropractic sessions. I wonder if that would be worth a shot with these children?

My Father, a chiro, used to treat polio patients in the early 1950s. One of his patients was a former poster girl for the March of Dimes. I have the picture somewhere.

Are they sure that this is not Guillan-Barre'?

And by the way, this little epidemic has been going on since 2012.

OMG WHY DID I READ THOSE COMMENTS????? Never mind blaming the non-vaxed, but blaming Hispanic immigrants because they're so dirty and vile! I need to wash out my eyes.

actually, dalia, the mexican immigrant children are quite fully vaccinated. mexico makes sure that their population is well vaccinated, and the immigrants continue that practice here. there are no roads or public services in that nation, but the health department goes from house to house to make sure everyone has their shots.

Sigh... I'm just not gonna go there.

Okay I guess I do have to go there. I don't see how blaming "Mexicans" has any merit. And their vax status has no merit either, unless we are blaming the vaccinated for this disease. Can't we just say there is a friggin' disease without blaming someone? I'm sorry but the idea that non-vaxed somehow did this AND the idea that its because of immigrants is equally offensive to me.

that is a large part of the comments I have read too - about 50-50, it's the NON-vaccers and those (fill in the blank word) immigrants! predictable and still sick, sick, sick comments!  :irked

Well come on, don't you ladies realize figuring out who's to blame is far more important than figuring out how to treat the problem!
Apple juice, I think I may have misunderstood your post. Are you saying there is no logic in saying immigrant children brought it here or that they could have brought it here?

I read it to no logic. It's a disease that popped up like others, they just evolve. The commenters on the news pieces comment that the disease appeared due to a) the non-vaxers or b) them immigrants. Obviously neither is true. It's a blame game of the most malicious kind.
