Seasick

HI everyone. I've never done an online forum before... I'm in my 11th week and am very excited to be pregnant (first time!). But I think I have the worst job ever for first trimester- I'm cooking on a yacht. Now, for someone who gets seasick anyways (why am I doing this job??) I have been extra pukey- you can imagine what it's like. Smells are the worst thing. We recently hit some reef and salt water came into the pantry (extra stress we didn't need- we practically sank) and now it's festering down there and wafting up to the galley. That, plus deisel, garbage, and various other "old boat" smells are driving me crazy. Thankfully, my partner is working as crew with me and is being incredibly supportive (ie, cooking when I can't).
Our arrival in Ft Lauderdale (and the end of the job) is emminent- May 10th, which basically corresponds with the end of week 12- so I expect I'll be back to normal soon enough.
Then we'll be headed back to Canada to get real jobs...

Other than that I feel pretty good. My back gets sore alot- is that normal? The boat has air con so I can avoid the tropical heat (thank god). I haven't seen any doctors yet since we've been travelling but I've been in contact with a midwife back home. It all still feels just a little surreal.

hope everyone is feeling well...

Oh man, just reading about being on a boat and having stagnant sea water smells and cooking smells and everything is making me queasy ! I don't know how you are doing it!! Glad to hear that your partner is being helpful and supportive, though.

Woman, I don't know how you're doing it! : That sounds brutal. Some days I can barely cook myself food, let alone anyone else. Can you wear nose plugs or something?

I'm gonna hope this last week goes by super fast for you!

Holy cow, you've got it rough! one thing that helped me (i'm in my 11th week too) is my midwife took me temporarily OFF the PRENATAL Vitamins! and its working. I am so much less nauseaus!!! She said the one-a-day prenates hit the system like a rock. so instead, I am taking 800mcg a day of folic acid (ver important) and some extra calcium, and eating a lot fo fruit for vitamin C. when nausea subsides in a week or two (i hope) i'll start back up on a prenatal vitamin that you take a few times a day so its not all in one whopping dose. None of the regualr docs or ob/gyns ever mentioned this, but i trust my nursemidwife and think its ok...
best of luck!

gen~adventurer! reading your post made me feel like doing something!.. probably a little less smelly and rocky though...i used to travel and skydive, my first has 21 jumps in utero, (in the first couple of weeks before i realized she was there) i tell her about that when we watch the chutes come down sometimes, she thinks she's pretty neat now (shes 3) you are going to be able to tell your little one this srory one day, i think you're awesome!

Back on dry

I haven't had a chance in a week or so to get back to email, but what a surprise to read all your comments. Thanks so much for the support! But we're back on dry land now! And my last day on the yacht was today!!

I wish I had thought of nose plugs.
I also didn't think of stopping my prenatal, mostly because I keep thinking i'm not quite getting enough nourishment. BUt it sounds like that might have helped.
I had somehow hoped that nausea would magically disappear at the end of the 1st trimester, but no such luck. It's not as bad as before but not gone. Hopefully now that I won't have to cook it'll get easier. Now we have some time Ft. Lauderdale to visit relatives before flying back to Canada (back to real jobs...???) I'm not sure I would do the pregnancy thing on a boat again. Thanks again for the comments.
