One concerned parent to another

I'm Vybhav and I'm a stay at home dad. I'm particularly concerned/paranoid about my kid's safety when she's either travelling to school or her friend's house and I was thinking of implementing some sort of location tracking/parental control mechanism, atleast untill she turns 14-15.

I was wondering if I'm alone in the way I think? How do you deal with a situation like this? Let's say your kid's start going to school on the school bus and you'd like to ensure that he's left the school on time, on the right bus, travelling on the right route, etc. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this matter too.

If you have implemented any solutions? What are they and what are they missing?

Cheers,

Vybhav

Hi Vybhav,

I believe it's understandable for a parent to be concerned about their children's safety, especially as they get older and start traveling alone. Have you looked into cell phone tracking devices? If your daughter already owns a cell phone this may come in handy. Sorry I don't know of any other way to track kids' movements (my kids are too young to travel alone right now and are currently being homeschooled). If you find something that's useful please let the rest of us know; take care!

Hello Rahela,

Thanks for your response. Glad to know that I'm not the only one feeling this way.

Yes, I'm currently looking into apps for cell phones with as many features as possible. I'd love to hear your thoughts on how you would approach this topic with your kid and take his/her consent for this.

Cheers,

Vybhav

Hi again,

I guess the way I would approach my kids about this, is to let them know that I'm only doing this for their own safety. Since they would be old enough to understand, I could explain to them about what scary things can and have happened to others while traveling alone, and that in order to protect them, I want them to carry tracking devices that reassure me of their whereabouts. I would also teach them of ways they should protect themselves should they come across any sort of danger (God forbid). I've already taught them about stranger danger when they were younger, I guess I would have to also start teaching them about how to protect themselves as the reach the stage of adulthood.
