OK - I am trying to figure out if I am missing the whole Montessori thing here. My to be 3 (in July) year old has had trouble adjusting in pre-school to dressing himself for outside play, so he misses outside time while being resistant to dressing himself. Lately, he has been putting his shoes on all messed up, with the tongue shoved up in the front, the back flattened and on the wrong feet. When I requested some quality control, the response was that unless he requested the help he would not get assistance, especially since he is finally doing it himself and has been resistant to doing it on his own. I believe in the whole Montessori independence idea - him being and learning independence, but I don't want his safety or play impeded by his age limitations. Am I just not in the Montessori flow here or should I push back on him needing more help?

Thanks for your feedback.

My son is in Montessori too and turns three in August. He gets lots of help with clothes, wiping his bum, knowing when to go to the bathroom and more. It is only at age three and up they are in a casa. He does occasionally come home wearing his shoes on the wrong foot though so I presume he sometimes puts them on himself.

Making a child miss outdoor play time because they wouldn't dress themselves seems wrong to me. I would talk to them more and try to understand what's happening.

Oh my gosh my son would not have been able to swing that school. He couldn't dress himself until he was at least 4, due to developmental delays, and shoes with tongues were especially difficult, not to mention figuring out left and right! He went to a public ESE pre-school where they knew what his limitations were. He eventually caught up after years of therapy and he can take care of himself now.

I think they are expecting too much from your son at this age. Like you said, it is a safety issue too.

Can you get shoes that are easier for him to put on himself? I think they are hideous, but Crocs makes warm and cold weather shoes that most kids can get on by themselves. Mark his shoes for left and right in some way that he will remember? I would write on them, with matching letters on the socks for right and left.
