I agree with (mostly) everyone else. It depends. Neighborhood, maturity, How many neighbors you know? How many of them would look out for them. it takes a village to raise a child.
When I was little i lived on a dead end, all of the parents watched out for the other kids, AND reported back to parents. We were allowed to the end of the street no further, Unless the older kids were with us. I think (if it is a safe neighborhood and your child is mature) they need that independence. But those two factors are hugely important. That said i wouldn't even cosider letting my DD go alone until she was 9. I live in a very safe neighborhood aznd my DD is advanced (although she is only 13 months.) I would let her play 3 or 4 houses down and up at 7.5. This is roughly.
