Something so stupid I just have to laugh.......

My son came home with a letter from school today. It said, "Due to the laws that govern administration of "medication" of any sort, that "medication", must be in a labeled original container or box, otherwise, it cannot be given here at school. Whether it be over the counter or prescriptions." Then there was another paper in there that they wanted me to fill out and sign saying that doctor _____ prescribed _____ medication, the diagnosis, dosage, time, etc. It also said, "I authorize the school to assist my child in taking medications as listed above. I agree that I will not hold liable the _____ School District, the school, school nurse or his/her designee in assisting my child in taking said medication."

The funny part about this.....It was about breath mints. Yes, that's right, candy. :LOL He brought some Spry Mints (Good for your teeth and bad breath!) to school with him (Starting months ago.) and I put a note in the bag saying what they were and what they were for and they are treating it like a medication now.

Of course I'm not going to fill out the paper they sent home. That would be ridiculous. Or, I could fill it out and say it was prescribed by Dr. Mom and the diagnosis is bad breath and teeth. :LOL

in a lot of schools chap stick is medication too! Honestly, I'm so sick of this. I think it's discriminatory. A family with no insurance can afford to pay a doc 50-175$ to say your kid has chapped lips and needs lip balm to go outside for recess? And some health insurance does not pay for visits to fill out school forms unless you invent an illness. Or you forge the form, or tell your kid to hide it and risk suspension?

I am sick of them using zero tolerance as an excuse not to use good judgement, and feel like these policies protects them from liability. It does not help. Legal reform, and teaching everyone (including parents) to use better judgement are the only things that might help.

OMG that is so stupid. I understand having zero tollerence for illegal drugs in school, but are they really worried someone may over dose on chap stick or breath mints?

one other thing I thought of...havng these rules over obviously minor things might make people take the rules in general less seriously. People have this discussion about real-world rules too...some people believe making rules that make it more likely for generally law abiding people to break them fosters disrespect for the law.

: I think I just might fill that out and send it to school. :LOL I won't sign it though cause that would be saying I agree that it's a medication. :

Ahhh, the joys of public school. :LOL

@ overdosing on Chap Stick and breath mints.

Like just now...I read your message in my email, but only your quote of me is showing up here in your post! I know it sounds wierd. I noticed it in TAO this morning, and then clicked on this thread under "new posts". Your post, #6 , the laughing smilie sinks into the bottem of the page when he laughs.

For me reading your posts, it i like they are cut off at the bottem after a few sentences...

Hey folks, is the weird stuff still happening on your screens? It's not happening to me, so it's hard to imagine. If it's still a problem I'll bring the concern to Cynthia and Heather.

Lauren, AnnMarie's posts are still cut off for me. They go for a few sentences and literally drop off a little before where her signature would be...I am getting no sig. for her either.

I am not seeing it on anyone else's...is anyone else seeing it on Anns? Wierd, huh?

Can you see the little green men in my backyard??

Seriously...it's only Ann's posts and apparently I am the only one they are disappearing for? I will have dh look at it when he comes home. He loves computer trouble at home after working on them all day!

Weird...when I was in 4th grade, our teacher made us rinse with fluoride after lunch and we were under strict instruction not to tell our parents. Every other grade, if we wanted OTC pain relievers or cough syrup, we just had to go to the nurse. And EVERYONE used chapstick and breath mints! There was even an espresso cart in my high school lunchroom! Also in high school, the school nurse could do pregnancy tests, HIV tests and pap smears which were kept totally confidential, and she would also tell students where they could get birth control pills and condoms for free during school hours.

How things have changed...I don't support zero tolerance. I have always thought there should be a 5% measure of tolerance.

: What's in breath mints that makes them a drug, anyway? :
