The birth of Kai
My fiance, Joshua and I made love Thursday night. This started some cramping, but our making love had been doing this lately. We went to bed and I was able to sleep for a few hours. Around 3am pains woke me up. I watched the clock and noticed they came 5-10min apart. I knew this was the real thing. I knew sleep would be the best thing, but my exitement got in the way. So, I got up and read some pamplets on stages of labor that my midwife had given me. After being up for an hour or two I went back to bed. They started picking up in intensity to where I needed to make little moaning noises, which got loud enough to wake Joshua. I told him I was in labor and if he thought we should call the midwife. He said no that she'd just tell me to try andd sleep. He said he didn't want to hear from me til I was yelling in pain and moved to the couch to sleep. (He doesn't remember saying this and can't believe that he did and apologized for it) So, I labored on, contractions averaging 6min apart but bearable with moaning. Joshua returned to bed about 7am and said we'd call the midwife at 8:30am. The midwife calls us first to cancel our appointment for later that day because she has a birth to go to. Joshua says uth oh. She talks to me to figure out how far along I am and decides i have awhile to go. She says to call her cell if things pick up and she'll arange for back up, otherwise try to relax and that she doesn't think the other lady will be long. I stay in bed and labor all day. I didn't want to do anything that would pick things up as I wasn't going to have this baby without my midwife. Joshua rubbed my back when I needed it and fed me brought me drinks and cleaned the house. Midwife calls at 7pm says she'll be over by 9pm. Knowing that she's on her way I get up and contractions get more intense. Joshua takes a nap and I head to the shower for comfort. Midwife comes and checks me. I am almost 7cm. She sets everything up for birth and then takes a nap on our couch. Joshua and I deal with the contractions. I have intense back labor, so Joshua puts preasure on my back for each contraction. Midwife checks me again when she hears things getting loud and I'm only at 8cm. I go to the bed to labor and exhausted I start falling to sleep between contractions. My contractions slow down and get less intense. After about an hour of this I get myself up knowing I need to get my labor going again and get this baby out. I eat some ice cream and a cliff bar and drink some recharge. I go to the toilet as sitting on it before had made things more intense. At this point the midwife came in to see what was up(she was sleeping on the couch) We told her of the cont. slowing down and she suggested I might need the break and maybe to try sleeping some more. So, back to bed, but now they were too intense get any sleep. So I woke up again. Hearing me up she came back to check me again. I was almost 9cm. She mentioned breaking the water to get me that last bit dilated. I agreed. Then I had several really intense cont. I was laying on the bed with Joshua putting preassure on my back and using the midwife eyes as a focal point. I wanted to say I can't do it, but instead I kept telling myself I could do it. Midwife checked me again and I had just a small lip of cervix to go so she suggested to try pushing to finish it off. I tryed pushing on my hands and knees, but wasn't getting anywhere accept that the lip did go away. So, I tryed on my side. I figured out how to push effectively and baby started moving down. Midwife had to give me oxygen as the baby's heart beat was decelerating. His crowning was the most amazing. They told be to reach down and feel the head and it felt so good and they held out a mirror and I thought it was so beautifull. I was stretching nicely, but with the next push I pushed him out entirely and ended up tearing. I went from about a 2in circle of head to him out completely. I was suprised by this as I didn't realize I was pushing so much. I pushed and looked down and there was my baby. She put him up on my chest and told me to rub his back as his breathing wasn't that strong and she had Joshua give him oxygen. As this was happening she did something that made my placenta slip out. Then I start bleeding. Joshua takes the baby and midwife works at stopping the bleeding. I won't stop bleeding and my uterus won't contract. I loose a lot of blood. Midwife tries everything, herbs, massaging my uterus, having me drink a shake with some placenta in it, homeopathic remedies, trying to get baby to nurse (without success). Through this I start talking to my uterus saying that it is a good uterus and it that it needs to contract while tweeking my nipples. Midwife is one minute away from calling an ambulance, but finally we get it under control. I lost a least a quart of blood maybe more. She is finally able to stitch me up and I'm finally able to hold my baby. She gets me stable and helps us establish breastfeeding. She stays and sleeps on the couch for a few hours and then checks us again before she leaves. She's was real impressed with how well I've done with that much blood loss. She said I had a tired uterus. I had a 23 hour labor with one hour of pushing. Kai was born at 2:13am Sat the 15th, weighing 6lbs2oz and measuring 201/2in. Despite the complications and the length of labor I am completely satisfied with my home birth. I would not have been allowed to labor so long in a hospital. Being in a hospital would've prevented or shortened the bleeding, but my newborn would've been taken away from me. Kai is doing exellent now and is already gaining weight.
