Something other than Cascade for the dishwasher!

I'm looking for a good, non-toxic dishwasher soap that really works. I tried Bio-Kleen and am not happy with the product. Anyone have good luck with something else?
Thanks!

We love Ecover tablets. We think they work better than any of the other mainstream brands. Sometimes you have to use two (hard water especially) but if you can buy them cheaply through a buying club/co-op they are very inexpensive.

A one to one ratio of borax and washing soda works great.

Back when I had a dishwasher, I'd make a mix and keep it in a big jar, and use a tablespoon in both compartments.

I love Bi-O-Kleen Autmatic Dish detergent.

I REALLY like Seventh Generation Dish powder.... It's expensive, but it does a better job, I think, than even Cascade, etc. We're tough on the dishwasher too- load it up with cooking pans, dishes that have been in my briefcase for a few days and have caked on spaghetti.... You know the drill.

I use Diamond Brite Gel in the dishwasher, its great....and you only use 1/4 of the normal amount! No phosphates or chlorine bleach. I buy this directly from the manufacturer for 6.99 (25 uses).
God Bless,

We use 7th Gen. too - it is great! I bought my sil the bio-kleen stuff awhile ago and she didn't like it - said it left things gritty. We discovered she was filling up the soap compartment when you are only supposed to use a couple tablespoons. Maybe that is the problem? She loves it now!

you can call me dumb!

but I don't know what washing soda is. Borax, I've got.

Thanks

washign soda is hard to find, but I tracked it down in the laundry section of an econofoods. It is made by arm and hammer (or you can get generic sometimes)
It's similar to baking soda, but more granular and it makes laundry soap turn to SLUDGE!

Thanks for all the replies! That gives me some options.

As to the amount of BioKleen, I am using the 1/2 Tbsp as stated on the instructions. Things aren't gritty, they just aren't getting clean.

I will try the 7th Gen. products as I have seen them at Wild Oats.

I have tried to find washing soda but have had no luck.

I still feel stupid, but

Is it a good thing for the laundry soap to be sludge? or is that bad? I am awfully new to this.

Thank you, LaLa!

oh yes, sludge is good!

Wait a minute ! Warning! I tried using washing soda once in the dishwasher and it gave all my glass dishes a cloudy look that I never got out.

Thats one of the things that the Bio-Kleen is doing to my dishes. If I have had any kind of soy product on the plate or glass (tofu/soy milk) it comes out very cloudy. I rewashed by hand in vinegar and Dr. Bronners since just rinsing didn't take it off. That worked. Don't know why that is happening. It also doesn't clean off anything that I have not already scrubbed off the plate with water and a dish brush.
