No boobs on MDC

Hi all. Actually this started on http://www.mothering.com/discussions...70#post1446070 thread in TAO. This is in regard to the new smilie Simonee made for the board: (thanks simonee )

:

Someone asked if it can be changed to show that the toddler is nursing (show a close up of tod w/ boob in mouth, and here's Simonee's response:

Can we discuss this here, or should I move the thread to activisim? (or can we discuss this on the boards at all?)

Why would Peggy say something like that?

And in regard to rules of the board: Should we not be posting links to pictures of our babes at the breast? Is it only ok for the members to show their support of breastfeeding by posting links to pictures, and not ok for the site to show support of breastfeeding by having a smilie of a babe at breast? What about the new avatar function, if I want an avatar that clearly shows boob and babe, may I do so?

Thanks in advance for helping me understand this.

Hmmm, I'd want to know the *exact* ruling. Mothering magazine has had nursing babes w/breasts on the cover, so I would assume it was the same rules.

Yes, which is exactly why it seemed so strange... :

This would be a lot easier to discuss if we knew the reason she did not want any "boobage." Maybe Cynthia can enlighten us?

Check out the boobie smilies here:

THEY ARE PROPERTY OF MBC, so don't copy-but maybe they'll enlighten or give some ideas!!

simone I don't recall exactly what I said to you in this regard but I thought it was more along the lines of I don't know what she feels about it, not that she doesn't want it. And I haven't asked her so I can't say. But we have a 'meeting' today so I'll see what she thinks.

Thanks for responding so quickly Cynthia. You are so on top of things. I look forward to Peggy's reply.

If boobage on MDC smilies should become ok, I'd like to vote that they be more natural, saggy boobs.

I'd prefer there not be any 'boobs', because then the board may not be viewed as 'work safe' for those of us who read here at work.

why wouldn't a babe visibly nursing be "work safe"?

Would it be ok if I had any of these pictures as an avatar?

Beautiful pictures Turqouise.

SewHappy, I can see how the MBC boobie ladies would be a bit much for the work place but a smilie where the mom is actually nursing with a hint of boob showing shouldn't be a problem at work.

wow, I'm a bit surprised.. If you don't want to see a nursing pic/boob... don't look, kwim?

I think the fear is that the site won't be rated as a family site, no? In that case, I understand, but if it were tasteful, as the cover of Mothering often is, then I don't see how that would affect the family rating. I think out of fear of losing that rating (official and unofficial,) MDC errs on the side of prudish on many issues.

I'm sorry, I think I overstated it a bit. I just know that she doesn't want "sexual" boobs, like jiggling stuff or sexy cleavage, as Cynthia has told me, so I kind of extended that to nursing, but there's of course a big grey area in between those. In a way, that's what Mothering is all about, of course.

I'd be VERY happy to have some boob visible on nursing smilies, I really hope she'll go for that.

Sorry for typing that up without verifying ~ without even really explaining it (must have been nak).

And I'll clarify too. I don't think a boob visual on nursing smilies would be a problem at all, nor would boob nursing avatar pictures. It's specifically the boob jiggling smilies that I felt were something I'd have to talk to Peggy about. Those are not breastfeeding advocacy expressions. They lean more into something of a sexual nature. I can see the gender equivalent being a dancing penis. I just don't know if Peggy wants something like that here so I wouldn't approve it without asking her first.

Cynthia,

While I get your point PLEASE do not use the penis as a comparision. Breasts are not strictly sexual by nature. Bare breasts, even non lactating, should not be thought of as inheritantly sexual!! Lots of body parts can be a sexual turn on to some-look at toes, they are a common place sexual turn on, so shall I stop wearing sandals b/c it may offend or make someone think sexual thoughts????

Point is, I hope MDC is above that. Now while I understand the internet and American society in general may not have realized that breasts are not strictly sexual toys, please don't stoop to their level and put a bare breasted womanand a jiggly penisinthe same automatic sex category.

BTW, did you look atthe link to the "jigggly boobies" I posted? FAR FROM SEXUAL, that site too would not allow anything pornographic and are striuclty a breastfeeding support site!!!!!!!!!
Bebesho, I can understand that the penis/boob comment is not a good comparison, but I CAN see why a woman just standing there with big boobs jiggling isn't maybe the greatest idea for an MDC icon.

No, there is absolutely nothing inherently sexual about breasts.... but that icon does border on kind of making fun of big, jiggly boobs and therefore is more of a "boob" smiliey vs. a breastfeeding one, ya know?

I get that Candiland-comlpetely. I just was more worried about MDC getting caught up in boobs asstrictly sexual. I used to be a work lurker (til unemployment) so I understand some qualms. I say let the nipple show as necessary!!

Then again, nothing beats when preggo w/ DS my insurance sent me a website about cord blood banking and when I typed it in ONE letter wrong AT WORK-I got porn, graphic porn, popping up all over my computer!! Being the Receptionist ALL could see...I was crying laughing along with the tech whom I buzzed. Yeah, thankfully they were lax there...

bebesho2: I saw your link and the first thing I thought of when I saw the clacker boobs was "if my toddler saw me doing that, she'd think I was ringing the dinner bell!" :LOL
