I am goint to start night weaning my ds and plan to try and do it gradually by having routine of bath, pj's then story. What bedtime book does your 2 yr old listen to? Title and Author.
Ds at the moment won't listen to long stories so I need something attention grabbing. He just nurses instead of letting me read to him/play which is why I am doing gradual weaning! Hope you can help

DS loves any book at bedtime, but sometimes he asks for Goodnight Moon. It's not long at all, and the pages have a lot of interesting things to look at.

OOoooooh, have heard Goodnight Moon mentioned a lot. Who is the author?

We read the Mercer Mayer Little Critter books - - "All by Myself", "Just forgot"

and the "if you give a mouse a cookie, if you give a pig a pancake, if you give a moose a muffin and if you take a mouse to the movie' books (there are 4 - a new one just came out - if you take a mouse to school) by Laura Numeroff (illustrated by Felicia Bond)

My ds loved "The Mitten" when he was 2. . . By Jan Brett - lots to look at on each page, and each page gives away what is going to happen next. He also liked "Annie and the Wild Animals' by Jan Brett, too.

My ds also loves Goodnight Moon - forget author as it is at my mom and dad's house.

His faves are also Mama Mama, Papa Papa by Hean Marzollo, and any Eric Carle book. His current fave is The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

We have a ton of random boardbooks that we let him pick from each night. He picks them out, usually about 6 or so and dh reads them before he nurses down. My ds is nightweaned but I still nurse him down for the night at first.

Goodnight Moon is Margaret Wise Brown
My dd also loves Runaway Bunny - she wrote that too
she's 3.5 now, but from when she was 2 we read
I love you, Good Night by jon Buller and Susan Schade

her all time favorite book right now and since she got it Christmas time
is "I love you Stinky Face' written by Lisa McCourt

great great book

we also like "is your mama a llama' but thats at grammas so i'm not sure of the author

We read the same three books every night. My dd loves consistency so we read the following books in the same order each night (she knows it's bedtime when we finish book #3).

Books: "The Going to Bed Book" by Sandra Boynton (dd likes the teeth brushing part)

"Time for Bed" by Mem Fox

"The Owl and the Pussycat" (nonsense poem by Edward Lear & illustrations by Jan Brett). I only recommend the Jan Brett illustrated version as dd loves the detailed pictures and hidden subplots in the illustrations.

We have Goodnight Moon; it's by Margaret Wise Brown (also wrote "The Big Red Barn" - we love that too).

One of the benefits of reading the same books is the opportunity for memorization by your toddler. I think there is something comforting in knowing exactly what comes next. I can skip a word in any of the books and my dd will fill in the blank. It's fun!!!

Dd's (27 mos.) favorites are the books I read as a toddler: Danny and the Dinosaur, Sammy the Seal, Grizzwold, etc. all by Syd Hoff. I've heard that these are hard to find or kind of expensive to buy, but they really are quality books (they were published in the '50s so they are a bit old). And now that I re-read your post, I realize you are probably in UK or Australia because of the way you spelled favourite. These books might not be available OUS. Sorry. They really are quality books, though, if you can get them.

Over the last two years, the consistant hits have been the books by Sandra Boynton. Particulary, "Pajama Time", "Hey, Wake Up" (not good for bedtime), "Philadephia Chickens" (with CD), and some other book by her that has about 10 short, short stories. I can't recall all of her books that we have, but dd has always loved her stories. There is also a British publisher that has great books. Their website here in the U.S. is www.usborne.com. If you are in the UK, it's http://www.usborne-quicklinks.com/uk/default.asp. Happy reading!!

My dd (2.5) loves The Cat in the Hat and The Sleep book (both by Dr. Suess). They're long, yes, but the rhymes make them fun to follow. She's also very into Harold and the Purple Crayon and all Sendak right now GL!

Our favorite bedtime story is "Guess How Much I Love You" by Sam McBratney
2nd favorite is "Time For Bed" by Mem Fox

We change stories around, and we also do like "Goodnight Moon", and "The Runaway Bunny".

Here are our current faves

anything by Sandra Boynton (short, funny illustrations, rhyming)

Goodnight Gorilla (forget the author, not many words, great pictures)

anything by Eric Carle (The Very Hungry Caterpillar, THe Very Lonely Firefly, The Very Busy Spider, From Head to Toe, Brown Bear Brown Bear What do you Hear?, Polar Bear Polar Bear, What do you See?, Panda Bear Panda Bear What do you See?, Pancakes Pancakes!) We like the board book versions best for little fingers.

Duck on a Bike (forget the author, GREAT illustrations)

any of the little board book versions of classic Dr. Seuss. Best one right now is Hand Hand, Fingers Thumb, but Wocket in my Pocket was so popular for so long that I could recite the whole darn book!

We read no fewer than 2 stories every night, with frequent reading bouts on the potty and for special time. At 30 months, my DS can identify about 10 letters. He's going to be a book addict like his mama!!

I have several pop up books that are special for bedtime!

I used to teach preschool, and we always read

How Does a Dinosaur Say Good Night by Jane Yolen

and

Daddy's Lullabye by Tony Bradman

My kiddos loved them and asked for theme very day before naptime.

Such great titles!

My 2yo dd really loves reading at night, too. This is how her dad can put her to sleep! I nurse her first on the couch, then she goes into bed with him and reads. It's working for us. She is also night weaned.

Right now books she loves:

I am a bunny - an old book (1963) with detailed and realistic nature illustrations by Richard Scarry, author is Ole Risom
Tucking Mommy In - by Morag Loh (kind of long)
Goodnight Moon - Margaret Wise Brown
Little Fur Family - also by MWB
And ... anything about potties, bears, and bunnies

Have fun!

Many of my speech therapist friends recommend Eric Carle books as they promote language and concept development. My own son loves them tremendously.

Oh we love ALL those books!

DD (just turned 2) likes to hear Goodnight Moon before bedtime and the Going to Bed book. OH she also likes Brown Bear, Brown Bear...

When DS was that age he like How Does a Dinosaur Say Goodnight, and Is Your Mamma a Lamma....

We love many of the above titles as well - especially Eric Carle (Papa PLease Get the Moon for Me is a pop out book - may be especially interesting for someone who is weaning and needs to be captivated by books!) My dd is 2.5 yrs, and LOVES books - we read a lot!

Some of our other favorites which I did not notice above:

the Toot and Puddle books, by Holly Hobbie
the Little Bear books, by Else Holmelund Minarak(illus by Maurice Sendak)
Where the Wild THings Are - Maurice Sendak
Blueberries for Sal, by Robert McCloskey
The McDuff Stories, by Rosemary Wells
Click, Clack, Moo, Cows that Type, by Doreen Cronin
Dogger, by Shirley Hughes
anything illustrated by Jan Brett
the Richard Scarry books - LOTS to see on each page!

I could go on and on, but those are a few of our most frequently read books. If you are not familiar with Chinaberry, check them out at www.chinaberry.com - great book recommendations there!!
