Sesame Street and BFing

Hi All,
This issue came up on the diapering board as I was happy to see that Curly Bear is using cloth. Anyways, it was pointed out that she is also being fed with a bottle and that SS seems to show lots of bottle feeding and very little breastfeeding. I wrote them an e-mail asking that they reconsider this position and am hoping that I can get some others to do likewise and maybe we can see a change!

Here's what I wrote:

As a loyal viewer of your programming as a child and a mother of three childen which regularly watch your programming, I am writing to you today about some concerns I have with the way you seem to promote the use of bottle feeding versus breast feeding. There is only one clip that I can think of (an "Everybody Eats" clip) which shows a mother breastfeeding her baby - yet several others using bottles. In addition it seems Mama Bear has chosen to bottle feed her new "Curly Baby". This is upsetting to those of us that would like our children to see that breastfeeding is a normal and natural thing that all people and animals do. I am hoping you will reconsider your position on this matter and aim to promote the breastfeeding experience.

On a side note I was happy to see that Curly Bear is using cloth diapers! As a show that seems to do a lot to promote recycling this was a good move from the usual portrayal of disposable diapers. Keep up that good work and your great programming!

*End of what I wrote*

If this is something anyone else wants to write to them about, here is the link to the contact page!

That bear was also born in a hospital. How realistic is that?

:LOL Good point. Sesame Street is great-- it makes me sad that they're such knuckleheads about breastfeeding.

:LOL - good point! I did think the names on the door of the "fairy tale wing" were adorable!

I was thinking about this earlier today, since we've been catching bits of SS this week.

SS is a sad little corner of the world where no mammalian babies ever get their own mother's species specific milk.

Sorry, Greaseball. Just being silly.

Why do they have animals on the show if they aren't going to make them act like animals? Why can't it just all be muppets?

i think i remember someone saying that Nestle or some other formula company helped sponsor SS...is this true? if so, it would explain alot.

Many muppets are animals. Kermit the Frog is the original muppet, I believe.
