Asked to cover up!!!

Today, I was in a bus with a friend and 6 kids, dd2 (10mo) started to fuss, so I began to nurse her, quite discretely, but not covering up (she likes to look at what's happening around anyways ), and that woman on the bus stands up from her seat, comes up to me and grabs my EllaRoo wrap on my friend's stroller, and puts it on my dd's head saying " use that to cover up" . I looked her right into the eyes, removing the Roo from my poor dd, and replied firmly "I do not NEED to cover up, thank you"
What is wrong with people? I wasn't even showing my boob! It seems that just the fact that they know a baby is nursing is disturbing them.
Thanks for letting me vent.

you handled it alot better than I would have. Who the hell did she think she was touching your things and your DD????????? Also, good for you for standing up for yourself and your DD
post #3 of 17
Good on you for sticking up for yourself!! I can't believe that women did that. Hopefully you taught her a lesson and she'll mind her own business next time.

I used to often see the latino women in my area nursing on the buses, even nursing toddlers. No one ever said anything to them.

That is so unacceptable! You handled it very well. I'm sorry that happened to you.

Another person with boundary problems, why would anyone think it was okay to cover up your dd. That is so rude. I think you handled it very well.

You rock! Some people...:
I've had someone offer me something to cover up with once, but I've never had anyone actually request that I cover up, to say nothing of actually covering me up! The nerve of some people!

By the way, I love the suggestion that has been made on other threads, which is to say, "No, thank you, but you can put this over YOUR head if it bothers you."

SBF said: "No, thank you, but you can put this over YOUR head if it bothers you." :LOL bwhahaha! I love that.

I wonder if that woman was mentally ill? I can't believe any sane person would actually have the gall to invade another's personal space so rudely! Man, I'm sorry!

you handled that very well. Great job mama, I would have lost my temper for sure. what nerve!
I would have lost my temper too. I would have been likely to hand the baby to my friend, stand up, and cover up that woman's head and say I was offended by her face. I can't believe anyone would have the gall to put anything over your baby's head. Omg I would have been steamed!

Here Here! Who the hell does she think she is? A stranger! UGH some people. I would have made a scene and maybe even lifted my shirt up and smiled at her!
I read the OP to dh, and he said the mama should have started hollering hysterically, "You're suffocating my baby! Why are trying to suffocate my baby! Help! This stranger is trying to suffocate my baby!"

Thanks for reminding me to carry a blanket with me when I nurse...just so I can refuse to use it and irritate morons.

the nerve! i would have either A)stared at her with a blank expression, dumbfounded that she had the gumption to touch my child and my belongings or B)dropkicked her.

you handled it well!

Thanks for the support ladies!
I wish I had told her to put it on her head or screamed she was suffocating my child :LOL , but since I wasn't expecting a comment and she talked to me in english (which is not my mother tongue and Montréal is a francophone city), I am proud of myself for being able to reply firmly, a few years ago (before I discovered MDC!), I wouldn't have been able to reply.
