Darn it! I was told to go to Home Depot or Lowe's or some other hardware store. Nada. But I will try Wal-Mart

I found it at a grocery store called Food Max. Just go through your phone book and call all the hardware/grocery stores. Someone is bound to have it. It's called Red Devil Lye and be sure to tell them that it's used to unclog drains.

I too have been wanting to make soap and couldn't find lye. However, my mom told me all about the dangers of having lye in the house with small children. Are there any other alternatives to lye in the soap making process?

the melt and pour.... I think not, but in cold process you have to have lye. I freak out about the lye too... I do it only when ds is not around, mainly at night.

Our Wal-mart said they hadn't carried lye for years! I would call & ask beforehand (going to Wal-mart is a big ordeal for us with 6 of us )

I've found lye at Fred Meyer & Safeway stores in the normal cleaning aisles by the draino (but DO NOT get the draino)

Its Red Devil Lye........

I only use it on the NIGHT SHIFT LOL! When all the kids are in bed upstairs! And I mix it OUTSIDE

so do you need to be around a lot of appliances? Like, I can do the dangerous stuff outside and not worry about running in and out of the house heating and cooling and stuff like that?

no, you just have to heat the oils up for a sec.... we have an outdoor grill with an eye on it, but I stay in the house with the door open, we have a tiny tiny doll house with the smallest kitchen ever... you can use a stick blender plugged up..
