How do you wash playsilks?

DD's playsilks are getting dirty with food, snot, etc. and I tried washing one on gentle, but it still got a little ratty. So I hand-washed another one, with a very mild liquid soap, and it still looked beaten up when it dried. (I put the first one in the dryer and air-dried the second.)

Are they not meant to last long? Do you just buy new ones when they get dirty?

I wash mine with Stella's clothes and line dry them. They're not as silky as they were when they were new but I'm not about to start handwashing playsilks, lol.

I hand wash with ivory dish soap, rinse, wipe excess water off with a towel and hang dry. They look wrinkly, but I like that look, so...

I put some in the washer...just to see what would happen, and they lost a lot of the color (these are some I made, so maybe I didn't cook the kook aid long enough), so I think I'll be handwashing them from now on...

i think it depends on the weight of the silk and the type of dye used.
I dye and sell silks and my kids are thrashed always cuz they take them everywhere we go.
they go in the washer with the clothes and into the dryer - i do use a fabric dryer sheet with them or they get staticy. they come out just fine with no fraying of any kind or loss of color.
