Who makes their own dipes...and what are good alternatives to hemp?

i'm expecting our 4th blessing this Oct and need to get busy on my newborn stash...i was going to do hemp, but have decided against it, even though i have a bunch of hemp jersey. i just don't want to deal with the potential stink of it. i plan on making flannel with micorfleece pocket style and for the inserts i'm going to use birdseye... are there any other trim, super absorbant fabrics out there? thanks a bunch!!

Most of my diapers are hidden sherpa soakers and you know what, those soakers hold overnight for us. And they are pretty trim, heres my son in this 4 layer sherpa, 2 layer flannel diaper. I have my special night ones that are 6 sherpa/2 flannel.

I've made a few from dh's old undershirts and LOVE them! They are super soft and are actually quite absorbant. I plan on buying some new cotton jersey or interlock to make some more. I used 4 layers in the body and 4 more in the external soaker plus a two layer snap-in doubler. Even though there's that many layers, they dry really quickly. Plus, they are super stretchy because they are knit. Jess at One Stop Diaper Shop carries 100% cotton interlock and I've also found 100% cotton jersey (or interlock, can't remember) at Joann's and Hancock Fabrics (make sure it's 100% cotton - one Joanns by me has it and another doesn't).

I really like flannel if you want trim and don't have a heavy wetter. Interlock or jersey is also a good alternative

I like the elcheapo diaper flannel you get at walmart for $1.76 a yard...it's much better than super flannel, IMO. Have fun! I'm a total addict now :LOL

There's also burley knit terry. I haven't tired it, but I've heard it's really absorbant. The diapers I've made that haven't been from hemp have been from sherpa. We love our hemp, though, and haven't had any problems. I like a mix of hemp and sherpa in my stash just because sherpa is so soft and hemp is trim and fits well under clothes - something for every occasion, right?
