I know I can understand why he wanted to burn the colony down. When he said that my dh and I looked at eachother and I just said "no doubt". Also the Native woman, forgive me I can't remember who she was but I believe she was the head of the tribe, said at the end of their visit that she felt very good about the fact they weren't helping the colony be successful. Their whole visit was just profound.
I thought the end sucked, the producers did a poor job with this show imo.
Oh, and I do agree the Mrs. Vorhees would have out of fear went to the sabbath had she really lived back then.

I can't believe the Governor's wife (can't remember her name) brought the food to the Natives. I thought that was arrogant and basicly just stupid of her. When she was walking up there I was thinking wtf is wrong with her. Yea and make sure your servant is trailing behind you carrying a heavy ass pot to make a good impression. Like the Natives really needed their leftovers.
I know she probably had good intentions but she should have thought about it more.

I agree with every single complaint regarding the last hour of the show. I would have loved to have heard about EVERYONE..not just a select few.

The CAlifornia people got on my LAST DARN NERVE!!!!! Having a greek school, getting ones portriat done..a little in L O V E with ourselves, are we??????

If I had to listen to that man talk in a class room I might have had to throw a spit ball or two. He was So annoying to me, and so pompous. Ok, so was his wife. They were perfect for one another.

Did we need to see Mr. Paul Hunt drunk in Thailand? Woo Hoo, Paul got to drink. Whoopdee doo daw.

What about Julia? What about the others. how did it effect them, what did THEY ALL think about it?

Here is a hint to the producers and directors...DO NOT BE SO OBVIOUS over who your favorite people are. We got that pretty quickly..move on down the line and give everyone else their own 15 minutes!

I mean, honestly, what about Amy Kristina? What about Julia? What about ( oh shoot..the aa man who left early..Jeff? ) What about THEM! I want to know what thye think too..not just the darlings of colonial house, ok?

Overall, I did enjoy watching it, because I find this sort of programming really fascinating..but holy cow..they did not do a very good job editing, and they did a horrid job( the people living it) accepting the fact that they were representing a completely differnt time in history.

You know what I would love to see ? What if they had a show with ONLY NAtive MAericans, and they allowed a group of them to go back in time and live as their ancestors did and showed that on pbs. Think of everything that could be learned from that..People could see native Americans as HUMAN beings..REAL PEOPLE..not just strereotypical type 'indians'..ykwim?

And then..people like my Stepdad could have soething to relate to other than old biased, hateful songs like "Kalijah " and being called " Chief"..oh lord isn't THAT funny to do ...

I wish I had the quote from the Sherman Alexie book , with the two guys on the bus, talking about how they are perceived...but thats the core of what I am saying. I hope I am making sense somehow to someone.

But maybe we could have that next..Native house or something..go up to the Seneca Nation, or down to the Hopi nation..or up into Alaska...ANYWHER..and show people FOR ONCE that these people had a belief system and a culture and lives and dreams and hopes and fears and wanted good things for thier children and took care of their elders and were REAL!!!!!
They had good ,kind, people and nice people, and gentle people, and bad people and grumpy people and pompuos assholes, just like every other culture on the face of this earth.

oh wait.... :

Surely, she's heard of the burning of the "witches" in this country?
In this country, the so-called witches were hung, not burned--not that that makes it OK, I'm just a stickler for details.

I think one of the assessors made a really good point when he pointed out that the Colonial House people were unable to trade effectively b/c of fears of short-changing the Native Americans. The real colonists would have had no qualms about trading a fortune's worth of furs for a few trinkets.

And I was pleased to see one of the other assessors speak out in favor of the servants.

I haven't read the entire thread, but I've watched the first three episodes so far. The other is on Tivo waiting for me. I've read a couple of interviews of the participants. Amy Kristina Herbert and Jonathan Allen did a chat for the Washington Post where she said that she is now dating freeman Danny Tisdale in real life. She also addresses the problems when she was packing up her things and called it a miscommunication. Do a google search on their names and it should come up.

sorry, daylilly. guess I've watched "Hocus Pocus" one too many times. :LOL thanks for the correction.

My thing about the Vorhees women is this - don't you think she would have wanted the status of having a husband on the council? I mean if food started getting scarce, the family of a council member would probably be closer to the front of the line for rations, don't you think? (in real 1600s)

I liked watching this show but I'm disappointed in it too. I hated seeing Paul Hunt talk about drinking beer in Thailand. Just seemed like such a waste of an awesome experience. Put some HS kids in there and see what they get out of it.

Also, really didn't understand why Danny Tisdale left. I really had alot of questions about that.

Oh, yeah, I keep forgetting to ask about Danny.

What was the situation around his departure? I missed that first hour...I wish they'd just do a re-run!
Danny left because he started to feel really uncomfortable.... he could see the writing on the wall .... he could see how slavery started to fold into the equation with colonists and it just made him too uncomfortable. I could see his point and I totally understood him leaving. kind of like being Jewish in 1930 Berlin House..... no there is no such thing as 1930 berlin house...but I got Danny's point.

by the way... danny is 45, didn't he look great. I never guessed he was MY age. lordy.

I would have liked to have seen more from the other servants and from Jack. What happened to Jack after the show?

Also, about the school, I thought it would be more likely to start a school for children instead of taking manpower out of the fields (Jonathan & Dominic).

As for the Heinzs, my husband and I just laughed or rolled our eyes when they were on. We're in No CA and believe me, we know a couple just like that. I sometimes wonder if people like that have ever had children... I know that Mr. Heinz talked about a daughter but don't know about Mrs. (Caroline). I don't think they meant badly, they just operate in a very different world.

Oh yeah..the school..I forgot about that!

Yes, how stupid can you be? You are trying to finish up work before being assesed so you take the man power of Domonic and Jon away and let the little boys be out there working alongside the adults? Huh?????

I think if it had een left up to the Lay Minister and his wife, they would have killed EVERYONE off the 1st winter, but thats ok, because at least two of the men would have gone to their graves knowing greek.

I really thought when he was talking about starting up a school that we would see the kids in the house learning..but nope, two adult men. Dominic was honest enough to state he was feeling a bit uncomfortable knowing that while he was sitting and learning and sort of relaxing, everyone else was out working their bottoms off.

The more I think about how this show was done, the more upset I find myself. It was just so much about the Hientz, you know, and so little about anyone else !
