Velcro vs Aplix

Are they different?

I've got my very baby patterns and made 4 diapers over the weekend - aio's with a hidden PUL layer. Overall Im very pleased with them, except for one thing - that annoying curling/pulling at the tabs. Where I've sewn the velcro, the diaper is so stiff - velcro, PUL, fleece and a knit all together, and the tabs pull and curl and stick out, on both the side closing and front closing versions. Velcro is so vicious too - the corners really scratch if you dont place it just right. I notice on our Happy Heiny's the aplix is really soft and flexible.

We have velcro locally, but I can get aplix and touch tape from an online WAHM here. I've got some metal snaps and a snap setter coming, but I practices with some snaps from the fabric store and I cant get the prongs through the fleece, PUL and the knit.

The aplix that is on the covers I bought for DD are just about worn out. The edges don't latch anymore so I have to keep some kind of pant/shorts or cloth cover on her so they lie flat.
I very disappointed in their lack of longevity.
I've only ever handwashed these covers too.
I prefer velcro-it's much more durable.
Maybe you can make the scratchy parts a little smaller than the fuzzy parts-if that makes any sense.
Does the curling interfere with the use/comfort of the diaper or is it an esthetics issue?

I use aplix 800 and haven't had any problems yet, but dd is only 5 months. I always curve of the corners before I sew the aplix on and don't have a problem with it sticking out or curling.

Don't know if that helps at all....

I think its a couple of things - a combination of the pattern style/fit on Eliza as well as the velcro itself. It's scratching up her legs, and not just from the corners, the whole front panel curls because the backing of the velcro is so stiff. But its an aesthetic issue too, it looks silly. I dont like velcro much, even with laundry tabs I find it sticking to everything and ruining items in the wash but I thought I'd be stuck with it for home made dipes. I havent had much luck with the hammer snap kits either - I just couldnt get the prongs through all the layers of fabric.

But I've just been down the shops and bought some gorgeous buttons. I unpicked the velcro carefully, sewed buttonholes on the wings and put the buttons on. It looks really cute, much nicer than velcro, and is quite easy to put on/take off on the side closing version, the front is more fiddly. But I found with buttons, I can put the nappy on her like a pair of pants and will only have to undo the buttons if she does a poo.

I can just move the buttons as she grows - I dont think a few needle holes in the PUL on the wings is really going to make the nappy wick. Having unused snaps or velcro on view really annoys me for some reason, I only like a dipe if it does up on the tightest setting.

This is a good option for a home sewer without a snap press - you can get such cute little character buttons and then you can also use the nappy as training pants.

I'd post a pic but dont have a digital camera. I have taken some pictures but will have to get them developed onto a cd. I didnt think I was much of a sewer, but I'm cured of hyena-dom. These are cuter than anything I've bought so far. I can spy a nice print, grab half a metre and put it away till I've got time to sew it up.

I've had the aplix wearing out issue too which is why I stuck with velcro in the first place.
