i just heard, and felt like i had to pass it on...

she was 61. younger than my mother, much too young. diabetes-related complications, apparently.

she was such an inspiration to me. i feel like she gave me a language to interpret my world, she broke down some walls in my brain, walls that had been built w/o my knowledge or consent and that separated me (from other women, from other people of color, from myself) and she pointed them out to me and handed me a sledgehammer. her voice was beautiful and strong.

also, nina simone died last year. those 2 women were my biggest heroes.
