What would I need to use to dye these 2 dipes?

I have some Motherease Sandy's that I bought used and they were said to have started out unbleached but are now quite white. I'd like to turn them into pretty colors before my babe gets here but I don't even know what they're made of so I have no clue where to start?

The other dipe I want to dye is a SOS. This one I bought brand new and haven't even washed yet. I figure I'll probably have to do that to it at least, but from there what do I need to use?

2 routes you can go. One of them I haven't tried. You've got www.dharmatrading.com - procion dye. You would need dye, synthrapol, soda ash (can get at store that sells pool supply, it's sodium carbonate ph UP hot pink lid), plus some salt. The directions are on the site. For just 3 diapers, I wouldn't go this route.

I know somebody else that got some dye from JoAnns and things turned out fine. It was a *fiber reactive* dye - NOT RIT. That stuff is junk. Maybe it was a dylon dye or rock something. Someone else will know

Yeah on what elfinbaby said.

I am not familiar with the diaper brands, but if they are of natural fibers procion(aka fiber reactive) dyes will do the trick.

I believe you can buy tie-dye kits that contain procion dyes at Joanns or at WalMart. They should contain everything you need to dye the dipes. Quite honestly, the only ingredients that are critical to your dye job turning out right are soda ash(aka pH up at pool stores) and the dye itself. Salt can give the color a boost but an absence of it won't make that drastic of a difference.
Synthaprol(a detergent) is also good to have because it helps make washing and rising more effective, but you can get the job done even if you don't have it.

Anyways...like Elfinbaby said, check out Dharma for directions to get you started.

Happy Imagining!

I don't know what the Motherease Sandy's are made from.

The SOS is hemp so the procion dye should work. I saw another post that mentioned it, just got confused over whether I needed that or could just use kool-aid.

Also recently read about someone using Wilton food dye to dye something...I think it was wool.

You can't use koolaid for any cotton/hemp fibers, wool and nylon covers you can dye with kool aid.

Thanks, I am glad I asked!

A quick google revealed that Motherease Sandies are 80% cotton, 20% polyester, but only cotton touches your baby. So probably the loops are cotton and will dye up fine with procion dyes as well. You might have a bit of a heathered look if not, the cotton fiber will still dye but the polyester will not, but it will still be pretty.

Have fun!

Great, thank you!

I did go to the motherease website and didn't see the info there but at this close to my EDD it could just be my brain, I just wanted to mention that I tried so I wouldn't appear totally lazy.

No prob. Sometimes it is all in how you type in your search terms. I am just a google nerd.

If you are dyeing the sandys will the tag on the front with the whale logo also be dyed or is there any way to keep it from dyeing along with the diaper?

I just dyed my prefolds and my ME OS with Dylon Cold dyes and they came out beautifully! The dye is cheap and locally available so I went that route and all my colours are very true to the chip on the tin so no surprises. It was easy and really fun! I just did them in my laundry tub. My ME OS that are unbleached did come out a little differently but not by much and the white ones were right on.
Have fun and post pics when you are done! (I'm going to post one tonight!).

mamacarey - I really don't know about that. Hadn't thought about it yet.

Perogi - Let's see those pics!
Ooh, I hadn't thought of dying my cpfs...I could do that too, how fun!
(I am planning on doing a couple of onesies we got that are plain white)
