help choosing fabric!

I was at Wal-Mart today and saw a few fabrics in the clearance bin that I really like but I have no idea how to tell if they are appropriate for a pouch/sling...They are not labelled at all (even if they were I would have a hard time! ) So what exactly am I looking for or trying to stay away from? And how can I tell if the fabric is okay? Or at that price do you just try it out and hope for the best?

I usually use a twill fabric for my pouches b/c it doesn't have a ton of stretch and I like a nice snug fit. You can usually get a good 100% cotton twill for 2-3.00 at wal-mart.

I'm no expert in making pouches, but I made 2 the last 2 weeks (and will be making more). The first one I used a pretty light weight 100% cotton. I thought it worked quite well. Then I made one with stretch cotton (97% cotton, 3% lycra) and its super comfy. The material is thicker than the 100% cotton, but not too thick for the summer. I got my fabric from Joann's btw. I can sling dd#2 for hours without feeling it at all. I agree with LuvMy2Kidz though that you probably don't want a lot of stretch, but a little stretch is very nice too.

will 100% cotton work? i have no idea what type of cotton it is but its the type u'd make clothing or simple pillows out of. also how many yards? would 1yd be enough?

i'm guessing 1 yrd = not enough.
the standard woven cotton width is 45 inches. so your piece would be 45 inches x 36 inches before washing. 100% cotton would shrink some if you washed it.

twill comes sometimes in 54 or 60 inches wide. ask at the cutting counter if you can't figure out what it is. at the bare minimum they could measure for you.

i just made one and cut the fabric in half and sewed them together to make one long piece, used french seams on both ends and i'm sooo thrilled!!! i cant believe i didnt try a pouch sling sooner!

What's a French Seam?

i believe it's when u sew up a seam then flip it inside out and sew it up the other way too to reinforcethe seam, hope someone can explain better.
