Liquid chlorophyll in last trimester?

I'm almost 39 weeks and my midwife suggested I take an ounce of liquid chlorophyll a day. She said it would help me get more calcium and other vitamins, but then did say that women who take it tend to have shorter labors.

Is this one of those things that promises a short, painless, easy labor? I don't want to take anything to make that happen; if it happens on its own, fine, but if I'm just meant to have a long difficult time then that's what I want!

Does anyone have experience with it?

My midwife recommended liquid chlorophyll to me when my hemoglobin came up short around 28 weeks or so. I took it for awhile and felt fabulous, but then ran out and was lazy about getting more. I'm 39 weeks right now and I'm thinking about getting some. I think most of the benefit lies in that it is rich in vitamin K which helps clotting and prevents excessive bleeding. It also strengthens the blood and is an overall tonic. I haven't heard anything about it resulting in shorter labors, but I think it is a good thing to take in general to prepare for childbirth. Oh, and the mint kind is really tasty!!

Funny, I just started taking liquid chlorophyll last night. My hemoglobin reading was a "9" on Tuesday, and I'm working like mad to bring it up.

My midwife highly recommended the chlorophyll. She didn't go into great detail (it was late) but she did tell me that the oxygen level in your blood affects the hemoglobin count. I'll have to read the handout again.

She didn't mention anything about shorter labor. Maybe that is one of the positive effects from better overall health?? I don't know.

But I agree with mamachiquita - the mint is yummy! Much tastier than the Florodix!

Liquid Chlorophyll is so good for you and also it's good for having your iron high for the delivery. I've never heard of it making a labor quicker but it will make you healthier so I suppose the healthier you are, the smoother your labor will go. Good for your blood pressure too. I'd say go for it.

I started it today. OMG - I felt SO GREAT TODAY!!!! My energy was back! Is that why?

Shorter labors? Yikes.... I'm having a homebirth and don't really want it to be an Unassisted birth! I hope my midwife makes it... but I don't want it to be 18 hours either! Well, honestly, I'm not worried about it. I have heard that 2nd labors can be much shorter.

Ebethmom, I'm in the same boat, though my level is 10.9 now. You can read about my saga here if you wish:
What brand of iron do you take?

T
I bumped into a friend today who does NAET treatment sort of a form of muscle testing, accupressure to relieve allergies/health problems. She held out my arm and asked in her mind if I had problems with iron absorption (I'm not sure what she asked). If the answer was No, my arm stayed strong, if it was Yes, my arm lost all it's strength. Yup I have a problem with iron absorption!!!! According to her, giving me more iron won't help this situation. (I forgot what she said exactly.) We'll see....

Would it be ok to take liquid chlorophyll if I'm already taking a prenatal with iron?
Milk4two, it is perfectly safe to take chlorophyll and a prenatal with iron. Liquid chlorophyll actually doesn't contain a great amount of iron (if it has any even), but as a side note it does contain a good deal of copper which is essential to buliding hemoglobin. However, I think the magic of chlorophyll lies in that it does oxygenate the blood, and due to the fact that it is "plant blood" it lends us its properties for building up our own blood. So go ahead and take it if you want!

Tanibani, I literally noticed a boost in my energy level the day that I started taking it! It probably is the chlorophyll. Geez, I really need to pick some more up....Here I am talking it up and I've been forgetting to get more for myself.

Adria, most iron in PNV is not well absorbed because you need to take iron separately from other vitamins that inhibit absorption. So, yes, something like liquid chlorophyll can work well to keep iron levels normal - just take it at another time apart from your PNV.

About the chlorophyll creating faster labors, I'm not sure about that. Some people are really into supplements to make "easier, faster" labors, I'm not sure if that should always be the goal. But, I do know that chlorophyll can help give energy to women with low iron levels.

I used liquid chlorophyll for my first because of my hemoglobin levels, worked very well.

I have taken it off and on since then. I detest taking iron so I prefer taking chorophyll.

I have had short labors with both of my girls. Ask me come late October what what my 3rd hb was like :LOL

I know this is an old thread, but my midwife gave me liquid chlorophyll because my iron level sunk down into the 10 range from the 12.5 it used to be. I'm taking 1 tsp mixed with about 12 oz of water (I personally find the taste gross... my 19 mo old daughter has had sips of it from my glass and calls it juice and thinks it's yummy though, heh)

the 1 tsp was the recommended amount on the container, is that how much a pregnant person should take?

Also, will it help boost my iron from the 10's back into the 11's or 12's? I'm due in Oct, so I have 7 weeks left till the due date.

I'm just bumping you in hopes that someone answers you. I have the same question.

I'm not sure what exactly my level is, but I just started the liquid chlorophyl (b/c of this thread ) and I couldn't fall asleep for nap today I hope that is a good sign.

I'm also taking a very strong infusion of nettles tea daily, and when I get around to making it, a yellow dock syrup.

I'm more concerned about my baby not having a healthy supply of iron before we start solids. So I really want to attack this thing

My iron level had sunk down to the 9 range and in a week I brought it back up over 12. But I was also taking yellow dock and a tincture in addition to the chlorophyll.

You brought your hemoglobin levels up three points in one week? I'm a tad shocked. Really.

? I've had women on a regime like this and have never expected to see sharp rises like that. Were your values sent into to a lab or were they done with one of the hemoglobinometer thingies?

Actually, I remember it was 2 weeks. Oops! And it was done with the little thingie.

Even at two weeks, I'm totally shocked. I dont' think I've ever heard of such a thing!

What's a bit more normal to see? That's what I'm looking to find out.

Where does one purchase liquid chlorophyll? How is it made?

I guess it all depends on when the supplements are added. Around week 8-12, the blood volume is rising pretty rapidly, with a peak around 28-31 weeks. This changes any readings you get.

For instance, if you have a woman who has a hemoglobin of 11 at the start of her pregnancy, you're going to see (or hope to see, with good expanded blood volume) a decrease in this level by week 30. If it's really low then (and most women at this point will either feel horrible because of anemia or not notice at all) you can start supplements to increase the levels. Usually, you'll see around a one point rise over a period of four to eight weeks. Usually. And, that rule is pretty basic for AFTER 30 weeks - beyond the blood volume expansion. If you do it at the beginning of pregnancy, you'll see a slower rise (or it stay the same, actually).

I don't use the hemoglobinometer because I just don't trust them much (my preceptor used them and we could get two different results between the each of us - sometimes off by 2 points!), but I do use the lab because it's so easy and exact.

Does this explanation make sense?

I got an organic bottle at the co-op, big one, not sure of the size, at my co-op for $10. It's made from alfalfa.

I had been taking it and stopped a few days ago. Ever since I have been so tired!!! I didn't even correlate the 2 until I was reading this thread. Anyone else have trouble when they quit taking it? I have been so tired that I was begining to think I was pregnant.
