I first bought the album, "Walk On" in '95 after hearing him on NPR's "World Cafe."
Loved that album, but haven't really kept up with his releases until recently when I took a bunch of his CDs out from the library. I love "The Best of..." from 1998 and was touched by his annotations that refer to the wife and kids, especially when he writes about "Feels Like Rain": "...for my wife, as all the love songs are." I thought, I wonder what it's like to have all these beautiful love songs written for you.
Then I was listening to 2000 CD "Crossing Muddy Waters" and was kind of distressed about all the songs about love lost. I found an article on the web that mentioned that he had a wife who committed suicide and left him to raise a daughter (which is the subject of the title track, although suicide is not mentioned outright). Does anyone know anymore about his personal history? Did he lose his wife recently or a long time ago?
