Truth is relative. There is nothing that is true for all people. What is true for some is not true for others.

I am just curious to hear people's views on this. My personal view is that truth is one and that only thru embracing the truth do we encounter true love, and true freedom.

I think there are fundamental truths that are one but there are also relative truths as well.

You forgot a third choice:

I have no freaking idea.

"What is Truth?"--Pilate

The farther one travels, the less one knows.

You forgot to put "other" as an option....

I would agree with hotmamacita...

I think there are some universal truths that apply to everyone, and there are some things that depend on the type of lense you look through.

I'm learning to be content with this idea of not knowing, and not defining.

Didn't vote as no options fit. Something can be emotionally true and not factually true. The difference comes from what one person finds to be more important for that situation, the factual truth or the emotional one. Sometimes one is more important and sometimes the other is.

it all depends on your definition of the word "truth"... or is it "Truth"?

it's hard to say...there are natural laws (truths)-like fire burns-then there are people who firewalk and don't get burned.
I think it (reality) is a matter of collective consciousness.
Say truth is an elephant and the elephant is being grasped by 4 different blind people-the one with the trunk definately feels something long with holes in the end of it-the one with the tail feels something short with hair on the end of it-the ones in the middle feel large expanses of rough skin....they all are tuned into what is true (for them) and what is real.
I think the crux of it all lies in perception-and everyone has their own perception.

p.s. so i didn't vote

p.p.s.s.-also we have to take into account perspective. We all stand at our own frame of reference and have our personal filters for everything that we encounter.

The way the question is framed is not applicable to my notions of truth/reality. But it says plenty about those of the OP!

ETA: Oops, didn't realize what forum I was in or I would not have posted.

I think there may be universal truth but that doesn't mean that that One Truth is only revealed in one specific way..........I like the elephant story. It could be that we are all blind grasping at the same elephant - or could Paganism, gnosticism, Judaism, islam, Christianity, Bahai, Atheism, etc. all be parts of the same Truth? Most adherents of different belief systems don't want to believe so..........but it could be true.

I didn't vote - because like some of the others it's not all black/white to me. I think there are some universal truths and lots of relative truths.

Oddly the poll does not reflect the opinions of the posters. Seems the One Truth believers are not posting to say why they believe in It. :

It's a dichotomy. It depends on one's perspective.

well, only 18 have voted, but there have been over 150 hits on this thread...
I think the question and answers were worded wrong, and the majority of people here didn't vote for one reason or another (myself included).

I wish, then PB would come back and edit her poll! PB?

ITA that Truth is subjective.
We see through the lense of our individual consciousness.
What I experience and know to be truth is complete and utter b.s. to another person who hasn't had the same experiences.

I could also say that the only thing I *know* is nothing.

I would also say that there *are* ultimate Truths, but if any of us really understood what they were, we would not have any need to live as a human on earth.

I used to believe in Absolute Truth, such as it is, which is to say I don't know what it is. Now I believe that nothing is absolute, including the idea that nothing is absolute. So everything is absolutely relative, or relatively absolute? :LOL

I tried to get into a discussion with someone, but he refused to see my side of things or concede that anything I said was valid. Why? Well, because he considered me an objectivist and he completely rejects that world view. There is absolute truth that transcendant throughout time and space regardless of whether or not anyone accepts it. I can accept that, actually. For example, I believe that slavery was morally wrong in an Absolute sense, even if it was once a worldwide practice. However, I have a real problem with the way that people try to implement their beliefs. He knew what was absolutely true because he believed it to be so, and because he was willing to believe it, that was all that was required. He told me he had a Source and that was good enough for him, but he never said what it was. That sort of Absolute belief in one's own correctness is Absolutely maddening.

And I also am starting to believe that in many cases, the truth doesn't matter and will never be known because people create their own local reality that is absolute in that time and place.

I didn't vote.
