rug cleaning, cat pee

Our cat sitter accidently locked my cat upstairs for a day, away from his litter box. Poor guy. He has never had a "potty" accident in all his 12 years. He must have used the area rug in our living room to pee on as it smells pretty bad.

I'm going to rent one of those carpet cleaners from the grocery store. I don't want to use their detergents though. Does anyone have a recomendation. I'm thinking I'd just use vinegar and water, but will that get the cat urine out?

Thank you,
friend of mine (using papabliss' account )

Vinegar may work, but for our potty training mishaps with our puppy we had great success with bac-out by bi-o-kleen. What I did was squirt it on straight, let it sit for a few and then use the machine to suck it out. Worked great, and I am extremely picky! No left over scent at all, which is really important for animals because they will keep going on the same spot if they can smell urine there. Good luck!

Natures Miracle, and it truly is. Can be found at all the big pet stores. It is an enzyme product that eats at the compounds that cause the smell. Run, don't walk to the store. No need to shampoo if you don't want. You just saturate the stain and leave it. Don't sop up the extra solution. By the time it is dry the smell is gone. It does have a scent that disappears when it drys.

Make sure you put enough to saturate into the pad below the carpet. It can take a few days to dry also, because it is pretty wet.

We have an older dog that sometimes has accidents, works wonders.

Dang, I should be a spokesperson, lol.

Thanks you guys for the ideas. I tried 3boysmom's suggestion because I had the bac-out by bi-o-kleen. It didn't work though.

My problem, I think, is that I'm not sure exactly where on the rug he peed. There are no stains. It just stinks. Also, we were gone for over a week so it had a while to sink in. I'm not sure what day during that time was the day they accidently locked him upstairs.

So I put the bac-out in a spray bottle and did the whole rug. I probably didn't get it concentrated enough in the right spot(s).

Anyway, I'm going to try that stuff Arduinna suggested.

I'm so bummed because my ds is so close to crawling. We have wood floors and the rug is about the only comfortable place in our house for him to practice. It is not doing him any good rolled up in the corner.

Many thanks!
