first thing you'll do after the baby's born?

i got this idea from another board i go to (and am almost in tears about the responses nobody seems to cherish being pregnant or hold the idea of birth + new baby sacred... or want to spend time with their new baby)...

what's the first thing you're planning on doing after the baby's born?

my response is... nurse the baby!

and then eat (maybe while nursing),

then shower.

Last night, I started imagining what the first few hours of our daughter's life might be like. Wouldn't you know, these thoughts were jump started by a yummy recipe for Pecan French Toast Casserole! I started imagining the food that I would like to serve my midwives and family.

I think that a casserole would be a good early labor project. Then someone else will be in charge of cooking it!

Then I wondered if I would feel like joining them downstairs. I'm thinking not. Lila and I can stay upstairs and let someone bring us a tray. I'm picturing myself showered and comfy in a pretty pj's.

I can't wait to hold this little baby and nurse her, and tell her how we've been waiting to meet her!

(almost all of the people on that other board were saying stuff like, they were going to finally indulge in some margaritas and have "them" time... one mama said she couldn't wait to go drinking and clubbing. )

I plan on nursing and "snuggling up" (as my three yo calls it) with my girls my dh and my sweet new little one. Maybe after a little family time a nap with the baby.

Rest, and let my body heal

Then, get a margarita! (sorry, I've been craving them all of my pregnancy)

But clubbing? Does this woman not know how life is going to change with a child?

I expect we'll be able to play pool again, when Moo is 6 months or so...

Here's the recipe - it's from Cooking Light

Orange-Pecan French Toast Casserole

1 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 cup butter, melted
2 tablespoons light-colored corn syrup
Cooking spray
1/3 cup chopped pecans
1 teaspoon grated orange rind
1 cup fresh orange juice
1/2 cup fat-free milk
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 large egg whites
2 large eggs
12 (1 inch thick) slices French bread (about 1 pound)

1. Combine brown sugar, butter, and corn syrup; pour into a 13 x 9 inch baking dish coated with cooking spray. Sprinkle chopped pecans over mixture.

2. Combine rind and next 7 ingredients (rind through eggs); stir with a whisk. Arrange bread slices over pecans in dish; pour egg mixture over bread. Cover and refrigerate 1 hour up to overnight.

3. Preheat oven to 350

4. Carefully turn bread slices over to absorb extra egg mixture. Let stand at room temperature 20 minutes. Bake at 350 for 35 minutes or until lightly browned. Yield: 12 servings

I will be trying to figure out how to BF my two babies for quite a while, I imagine. And I want to have a feast. After my DD was born, I didn't eat for a long time, because I didn't want to eat anything she would react to, but this time I'm going to eat whatever I want, even if it's delivered pizza that's going to make me constipated for days (another thing I was worried about after DD) And I want to have some champagne or beer.... I'll deserve it. My baby won't be out of my arms for a loooong time. I'm not going to go clubbing for another (hmmm?) 5 years, perhaps?

Oooh, I get teary eyed thinking about those first minutes and hours! I can't wait to meet him

I want to hold him, kiss him, nurse him, watch as my dh gets to know him, diaper him, dress him...quietly celebrate my son's new life and my new life as a mother and my husband's new life as a father and our new family.....

I have totally enjoyed being pregnant, but I do look forward to the things I will be able to resume when my baby is "on the outside", like having freedom of motion and movement, the occasional glass of wine with dinner, drinking a tall caffeinated caramel mocha- but I don't anticipate doing any of this directly after giving birth.

The first thing I plan on doing after delivering the baby is delivering the placenta.

After that I want to hold, nurse, cuddle, diaper and kiss my baby. My three year old keeps on asking if the baby is big enough to nurse. She knows that our goal is to incubate the baby until it is big enough to nurse and not go to the NICU. My biggest fear is being seperated from my baby!!

first moments are priceless...

I just had my baby...our first moments were held skin to skin, gazing in eachothers eyes, with soft sighs of releife from both of us.

I never BF before, but it seemed as if he knew what to do, as he inched his way towards the breast, and with help of my doula and midwife, he was latched on and eating his first meal, 20 minutes after he was born He's a pro now, and you all will be too! Good luck, and enjoy

The first thing I plan on doing after delivering the baby is delivering the placenta.

I've actually delivered the placenta and gotten stitches while nursing my babies both times!

My first in particular was NOT going to wait. He started crawling up my belly while still attached! He was nursing was firmly latched and nursing like a champ within five minutes of being born.

So, my plan is:
~ Cuddle skin to skin and nurse.
~ When she is holding her own temperature well, take off the blanket and gaze at every inch of skin, count her fingers and toes, and just drink in the miracle of this new little being coming into the world.
~ Chat about the birth (this is what I've wanted to do both other times. I'm high from adrenaline and just want to relive each moment with dh and my mom and the nurses).


(I know a lot of people who seem to think having a beer is the most important thing - I don't get that either!)

I want to play with his feet! He's been kicking them around in there and I just want to grab hold and cuddle them. And I want to see DH hold him. I am just so excited to see DH to melt when he holds his son!

I'm sorry for butting in! I already had my baby 12 weeks ago, but I wanted to say that ever since we found out we were expecting #2, all I dreamed about was nursing him right after he came out... my dream came true! 5 minutes after his birth, I put him at my breast and he has been such a great nurser ever since... I think it's so important for bonding and getting them to nurse well. Also I wanted to kiss his little tiny mouth!
I also wanted to play with his little toesies! Now I bite them every day (they are so chubby and cute!) enjoy your pregnancies, I miss it!

I want to experience my water breaking on its own, I want to see him come out all gooey and slimey. I want to wipe his little face and search his eyes and introduce myself in a whisper in his little ear.
I want to nurse him, watch his cheeks, see his lips suckle and savor every bit of the moment.

and see how long I can stay in bed, right there in that moment with them.

I want to hold her and look into her eyes while the cord pulses and the placenta in delivered. I want to rub any remaining vernix into her skin, smell her and offer her the breast. I want to savor the first few minutes of her life outside my womb, with ds and dh by my side.

It sounds like a lot of you already know if you are having a boy or girl! I have no idea...I am still cherishing every day of my pregnancy, knowing how terribly much I will miss this period of my life...I wish I had a way of recording these bumps and kicks and wiggles inside me. I will miss it so very much, down the road. But I have also been imagining the birth, and very much looking forward to pulling my baby out of myself onto my chest and locking eyes with my angel baby, and snuggling skin to skin, and when my baby is ready letting him or her nurse as much as he/she wants...(my babies have all been different in terms of latching on after birth, one nursed within 3 minutes and didn't stop for 4 and a half years, another refused to really latch for a day and is still nursing 4 years later, and the first I could never get latched on at all, so I have no expectation that I know what will happen this time!).
I don't want to let my baby out of my arms for ANYTHING, am half wondering if I can use my mesh water sling so I can shower with my newborn soon after birth, but I doubt that would be safe or fair. I wish there was something I could do to avoid that seperation while still getting clean! (I'll be having my baby at home). Anyway, great to hear everyone's comments on this, it is a great conversation starter!

I have to admit, while it isn't beer or clubbing, my first response to the title of the thread wasn't any of these heartwarming thoughts all of you are having. My first thought was sleep. In reading your posts, I realize that's not the first thing I'll do. Pull the baby on my squishy tummy and touch that skin that is so soft it feels like warmed silk. Look into his or her face and study the features. Hope this one will nurse; neither of mine has managed to latch on before days have gone by. Maybe this time . . . Eat, just because I have to. Shower, just because I have to. And sleep. Maybe it's just that I've gone into labor at 3 AM and 11 PM, neither time having gone to be before. So my thoughts on post labor are blissful exhaustion. Having a brand new, warm, squishy person next to me, instead of inside, and taking a nap. (Of course since my other two will be around, sleep is more a dream than a reality )
