Phonics/easy readers for preshooler

Thread Starter
We are just starting out on our homeschooling journey. I have a 3 year old who is desperately wanting to read. We have checked into Teach Your Child to Read(in 100 easy lessons)which looked very complicate and Hooked On Phonics....but for the price, I think we can do without. I plan to do the Oak Meadow curriculum, but thought I would help him with the reading since he is so interested. I am a former Montessori teacher and love the first readers the kids used, but can't find any.
Does anyone know a program or books that would be good?
I would like to stay away from DVD/Tapes/Cd's and do it the old-fashioned way.

I would look into Phonics Pathways by Doris Hiskes and Bob Books.

I would def look at this book-
Teach a Child to Read With Children's Books by Mark B. Thogmartin
This would be a good fit for you with the background you have shared. We have used this and LOVED it.
