just do what the good doctor tells you...

quote from a pregnancy e-newsletter i get (emphasis mine) ~

from now until you deliver, you will be visiting
your doctor on a weekly basis. Your doctor will be monitoring your
progression toward labor. There are a variety of
circumstances that affect your doctor's decision on whether to wait
or to induce labor. It becomes very important to follow all
of your doctor's instructions from now on. A physician can only be
as effective as their patient is willing to follow
instructions

so it's not the woman's decision at all, eh?

i guess we should all be lying down and doing whatever our doctors tell us, no questions asked...

Ew. Ick. :Puke

Sadly, that's what a lot of women do. Just follow doc's instructions and don't think about it. Don't ask questions... the doctor is always right! :

Come on you guys, you know doctors are very busy and very important people. They have lives too. Why would you even want to risk interupting a golf game, when it is so easy to just be induced. Plus, if you are induced early enough, the baby will be small enough that you won't have to have a c section. tsk tsk, one would think that just because you had sex about 9 or 10 months ago, you've gone through medical school the way everyone wants to manage their own labors around here. Next thing ya know, you'll want to have your babies on all fours like some sort of animal in your living room, or risk your babies drowning by having one of those water births!

Yeah that stuff makes me crazy.

I just got an e-newsletter about the myths surrounding pregnancy. It said if your doctor doesn't agree with something, it is a myth. OMG! Good thing I listened to that good doctor who said I was having a GIANT BABY that I wouldn't be able to push out and needed to be induced IMMEDIATELY. Whatever...my 8-lb babe came out just fine a week later. Thank you, midwives, for helping to defend us against these creeps.

Doctor? What doctor???

The LAST thing a healthy pg woman needs is a doctor. Haven't gone near one during pg for almost 19 years... Thanks for the reminder why. Run for your lives, literally!

Btw, you guys are hilarious!

More from WTE: "If your relationship with your practitioner breaks down irreparably, think about changing doctors...don't, however, expect to get good obstetrical care if you regularly switch...trying to find one who will follow your orders. Consider, instead, that the problem with the care you've been receiving may originate with you."

Yes, let's blame the patient for everything.

And more:

"Don't reject necessary x-rays, tests, or medications unless you have an authoritative second opinion that backs up your decision."

"Follow your practitioner's recommendations as to appointment schedule, weight gain, bed rest, exercise, medication, vitamins, and so on - unless, again, you have respected medical opinion that advises you otherwise."

A second opinion is not really a second opinion when it comes from another doctor.

And my favorite: "Never threaten or otherwise alarm a physician in a manner that could interfere with the treatment you are receiving." :LOL What could that mean? What if you don't shave and it "alarms" him?

It reminds me of when I was 41 wks pg with dd and went in for an NST. It was done by a resident (who was about 12 years old, I think) who said to me, "Well, we don't let you go past 42 weeks." Hmmmm....as far as I recall, I have to actually CONSENT to pitocin or other induction methods, don't I?????? Didn't say that, but wish I had.

My regular doc, on the other hand, was great--very reasoned about approaching my being post term, my wishes for the labor, etc. In fact, when I asked her about declining a hep-lock/IV, and she said, "You can decline anything you want. If they do it without your consent, it's ASSAULT." Kind of puts things in perspective, doesn't it?

unfortunately, how many courts would rule in the woman's favor?
Actually, courts usually do eventually rule in a woman's favor to decline anything. Unfortunately, it's not as hard to find a sympathetic judge to give an emergency order. So the woman may well win eventually, but it's too late to matter.

OMG I did have my baby in the living room, in water, on all fours howling like an animal. Did I go to medical school and just forget?

Sadly, it turned out that the LM that attended my labor seemed to believe in this. Every time I said NO to her suggestions it seemed she held it against me.

It's not just doctors.
