Hyperemesis gravidarum??? (and nursing)

I thought I'd post a new thread about this, so it can get immdiate attention. It's 2:30 in the am where I am. I just threw up for the fouth time. I've been timing it, and it's almost like clockwork - every 4 hours. I actually predcited this one when I saw the clock.
I'm thinking I'll need to call the hospital in the morning. the first time I was sick was yesterday around 4 pm, but I haven't kept anything down since yesterday's breakfast. The last two times was just water followed by dry heaves. I'm also feeling very tired and sometimes dizzy.
I'm wondering what this means for dd, 21 months, and nursing. Will I need to quit cold turkey or even temporarily, if I am on i.v.? I suspect they'd tell me I couldn't nurse. Any experience with h.g. and nursing?
Thanks!
back to bed.

Hi
I'm so sorry you're feeling so sick.
Firstly, I wouldn't jump to any conclusions that you have hg. Since you're vomitting so regularly today, any chance you caught a bug or something?

If the vomitting persists, I would definitely call your mdwife/Dr in the morn and see what they say. There are some things that could possibly help- lg doses of Vitamin B6 and i know there are some pharmaceutical drugs.

Anything you can keep down is good-- even if you throw it up 4 hours later, you will still absorb some nutrients.

AND, I wouldn't necessarily listen to anyone who tells you to wean.

Take Care!!!!

Nursing makes me feel like throwing up but so far I haven't. I hope it passes quickly for you.

I haven't been able to keep even water down all night. The vomitting got closer together. In total I've been sick 7 times in 12 hours. It's been 4 hours, now, but I am definitely seeing someone today. Thanks for your help!

I haven't been sick in seven hours and so far I've managed to keep down the toast and pears from two hours ago. The doc on call prescribed diclectin. Anyone know anything about it? I got gingerale and B6 for now.

I"m not sure about the Rx you have, but I was prescribed Reglan and Phenagren w/ my last PG. THe most important thing was to make sure I had kept down enough water in a 24 hour period. I used the RX sparingly, and tried to keep down at least 2 meals a day. I had hyperemesis the first 20 weeks, throwing up all day long every day Big to you! I have no idea how you do it w/ a toddler!

I am so sorry-I would have 12 kids if it wasn't for the vomiting.

With my twins I was sick all the time for 5 months and the ob didn't prescribe anything, just told me to drink chocolate Boost (hello?). I didn't lose any weight though.

With my son I was extremely sick again and lost 8lbs by the time I was 8wks. I never took anything but I was still nursing the twins, I just had to make sure I kept myself hydrated.

I would see what your practitioner says, but I don't think that you would necessarily have to wean.

Big hugs!

better late than never, I guess

Hi,

I'm a midwife, was just finishing a ceu unit on hyperemesis and thought this website on the drugs might be helpful, IF you're taking them still. hope you're feeling better.

I have had HG 3 times. The best way to deal with it is too eat constantly. Have 2 apple slices, wait 20 minutes if it stay down eat more. If you vomit wait 5 min and eat again. The main problem is low blood sugar and you MUST eat to get it back up. Even at night do not go more than 2 hours without eating. Take small sips of whatever sounds good to drink. Water is sometimes the hardest thing to keep down. I would avoid the drugs and try other methods first. You have not been sick for a very long time (although every minute is miserable) and drugs seem to be an extreme step at this point. HG is usually not diagnosed unto you are loosing weight I believe 5% of your body mass. Try ginger, dreid adrenals, milk thistle, and wild yam (not all at once) Acupuncture can to miracles. The 3 HG pregnancies I had I would vomit on average of 10-12 times a day and lost 30 lbs between 7 and 12 weeks with the first 2 and 15 with #3. Pregnancies 4, 5 and so far 6 was just normal morning sickness. Best of luck!
