I know we have discussed this, but I am really getting down to business now and want to get organized. I am going to part-time cloth diaper. I hate using cloth out of the house, the transportation is just too much. So I will use disposables out and probably during the night, I can't deal with the night leaks...

So....I am going to go with only CP, DSQ. I have some larger ones, I will probably get about a dozen small. My friend is sewing up some doublers...

I have used Bummis Wraps and Proraps...what wraps does anyone here recommend to use with chinese prefolds??

I may get a few more small CPF if I were you... For covers I would use Bummis Super Whisper Wraps and/or Motherease Airflows.

Caroline if you want to CD at night try either the solid color Happy Heinys or the Fuzzibunz. DS wears those at night and I have never had a leak and he sleeps 10 hours straight.

I love the Bummis SW Wraps and I am hoping to try Litewraps with "lil' bit".

Heather, I have tried every one out there at night....they always leaked and my girls ended up with awful rash if I didn't wake them up and change them. I really think I am going the easier route and doing disposables at night, at least for now. The thought of dealing with that all over again just exhausts me. Maybe this one will ahve tougher skin like my oldest!!

I love Bummis....I will probably stick with those....

Anyone know any good cheap doublers?? I like the terry ones, but with a top layer of fleece that would be nice too....

I think Joey Bunz has some fleece topped doublers if you like hemp. I am trying to think where else you can find doublers. I have never had to use them but I might since I am getting tired of stinky hemp.

Caroline - I have some of the Fuzzibunz stay dry liners that I bought from Baby Belle Bottoms I really like them cause I can use them on top of any kind of diaper I'm using at the time. They're also good when you know you won't be able to change the baby for a while.

I've never bought seperate doublers. I just always get one with the diapers I love the most. I love our Joeys to use as Stuffers, Krista started making them fleece-topped after I'd gotten a bunch so I've never tried them (always used a fleece liner that I cut out) but I know a lot of people that really like them.

Trimmest diaper (and still absorbent)... a joey layed inside a cover. Almost as trim as a disposible. Works great for those snug outfits (especially shorts and jeans). We used these with my DD before I got bit by the WAHM fitted bug. We used FuzziBunz a lot with my DD (my Dh really liked them). I've used the Happy Hineys with DS with really good results (like the aplix better than the snaps of the FB).

The only leak proof night diapering system that has worked for us is a Heavy duty hemp diaper (like a ManyDucks or night diaper or all-hemp Mudpuddles) and a wool cover like an Aristocrat. My DS likes to pee massive amounts at one time and that's the only way he wakes up "dry" in the mornings.

I like Proraps for the Newborn stage (cheap to get, especially if you get the seconds which look identical and easy to clean). After that I use a lot of wool. I know a lot of people swear by MotherEase Airflows as a pretty leak proof cover. I love using BizzyB Hive fleece covers too.

seriously... i finally have clue about all this diaper stuff and want more feedback from you experienced mama's. I know we have discussed this before, but I must admit i stuck my fingers in my ears and chanted " watermelon, watermelon... watermelon" right, Savannah!

how many diapers do I really need for each "stage". How often do you change your kids in a day and how much time do you spend washing diaps?

I just went through my diaper stash, handed down from big sis, and it seems... well,.. LACKING! she primarily used Nicky's, which look awfully leaky to me.. when i compare to the options out there anyway!

there's so much info out there and some of it seems awfully conflicting... What has worked for you? please include links to the products you are talking about whenever possible, I'm an awfully visual person and have way to much free time in front of the computer!

Anna--From what I hear Nikkys are actually really good covers. You might be in luck!

I use CPF's exclusively (saving as much money as possible is probably the main reason we cd, other than baby's health). I snappi or pin them and use nylon pull-on covers, either Bummis Whisper Pants, or Dappi. THey are both very inexpensive-bummis about 5 bucks a pair, the dappi's just 2 bucks a pair.BabiesRus has Dappi covers sold under the name Especially For Baby. They dry quickly, no velcro to snag anything in the wash, and seem more breathable to me than many covers. I snappi or pin with the bikini twist or roll the edges in, jelly-roll style, to hold in poops. I seldom get leaks on the covers--I'm really good at getting the legs nice and snug. I also use fleece liners that I cut out myself from microfleece on sale at the fabric store--they work great. I have a bunch of cheap washcloths for wipes.

I'm going to order some teeny-tiny newborn pull-ons from tinytush.com this time (didn't start dd in pull-ons until she was 11lbs.). They're supposedly for 5-8 lbs, so should fit a newborn well, I hope. I guess I have a chance of another early baby (dd was a 36 weeker), so I need to be ready for a smallish baby. I have a few nb proraps as well for backup.

As far as newborn dipes go, I'm going to order Newborn sized this time. They're in between preemie and the standard infant size, so should last longer and be easier to pin or snappi than preemie without the bulk of infant. I think the site that has them is greenearthbaby.com? Can't remember now, but I think they're only available on one site.

DD was in disposables for weeks until we figured out a system for her. I'm looking forward to cd'ing this one from the start.

How will you handle meconium?

I am planning to CD from the start too, but I am wondering what to do about the meconium. I hear it stains so badly it destroys the diapers. One suggestion I heard was to use a piece of microfleece as a liner during that time. It sounds good, but right now I cannot find microfleece in the stores. They won't stock it again until September. Go figure.

Anyone else have ideas or suggestions? Oh, I've also heard oil on the bum helps prevent it from sticking.

I have heard the oppsosite about meconium and dipes....I have heard from several mamas on the Diapering boards that the meconium doesn't pose as much of a problem as newborn breastmilk poopy. Hmmmm....

The newborn breastmilk poop comes out perfectly in the sun. For the meconium days, I'm going to use some of these liners. I was thinking that if I like them, they would also be good for out and about changings, to lessen the amount of poop I have to carry around with me!

Oh no, a diaper post!!! Don't get me started Ok, let me start by admitting that I'm a bit of a cloth diapering addict Ok, that said- I have a bunch of different kinds for my almost 2 year old but it's not nearly as fun anymore (toddler poop is kind of gross to clean compared to newborn poop!!!) So.... I have gone a bit crazy with the newborn diaper stash for baby Savannah! I wish I could show you all what we already have!!! They're so cute!

I got a couple kissaluv size 0, a bunch of Kind Hearted Women fitted ( I LOVE these and will be using these on her in the hospital after birth). I also bought a couple of poochies which are cute but kind of big. I have a bunch of other fitted and at least 2 dozen prefolds. I have plain covers like proraps and bummis wraps (I think I have about 15 size newborn and smalls) and I have about 6 beautiful wool soakers Let's see... some polar babies fleece wraps. I can't think of what else of the top of my head.

I never used cloth on a newborn because I didn't start using with my last babe until he was 4 months old and at that point he was already over 20 pounds so we had to buy larges. I have a good amount of newborn dipes but if she's a big baby like Sam (he was over 10 pounds at birth) then we're in trouble because she won't fit into most of them...

For all of you who have never used cloth- you'll love it!!! It's SO easy to wash and they're so cute on the baby! My son was alergic to the gel in the disposibles and had a constant rash until we switched to cloth full time. I even bring cloth on vacations with us because they're just so easy (although carrying a whole suitcase of just diapers annoys my hubby a little- LOL)

Ack! I'm trying to figure this diapering thing out. My mom got us some prefolds, but they aren't Chinese prefolds and they're the 15-30lb. size. I'm trying to figure out what size covers to get, I haven't got a clue. I figure I really need to be getting things like this....*sigh* I feel so clueless!

Those sound like about "premium" size. Those are typically "mediums". Depending on the cut of the cover, you might be able to use smalls but most likely you'd need a medium cover.

For the moment I'm pretty much ignoring the diapers my mom got me. I'm trying to work out what size covers I need for a newborn since I've no clue how much Vaysh is going to weigh.

There have been a couple of threads recently over on Diapering about whether or not the is a "need" for newborn covers.

My personal take... yes. And I don't have particularily "small" babies either. Tori (DD) was 7.14 pounds and Jack (DS) was 8.4pounds. And both of them swam in "newborn" clothes. I had to buy 2-3 "preemie" outfits so that they didn't look so "lost" in their clothes. I didn't use cloth with Tori until she was almost 4 months old. Jack was using cloth from the afternoon we came home from the hospital on day 2 (luckily he passed all his meconium at the hospital!). Small covers would have been up to his armpits. :LOL

I have a handful of newborn (with the dip) Prorap covers. I also have 2 NB Bumpy wool covers. But I found it was hard to use them with prefolds because he was always leaking a little bit of poop onto them. : A PUL cover is easy to quickly clean up but wool takes at least half a day to dry. This time I'm not going to use prefolds as a main staple, I just really don't like them that much. Once in a while is fine, especially when the constant BF-poop explosions aren't almost every nursing. :LOL I just never get a snug fit with prefolds... but then I don't have the greatest patience either. I've gotten a bunch of fitteds, it's just one less stress and hassle for me.

Do you want to do the prefold route or were you interested in fitteds?

You want to have a minimum of 4-6 covers for the newborn stage. Some people say they are too expensive for the time that you use them. We used them for 6+ weeks. One advantage with newborn covers, since they are only used for a short time, they are usually in excellent condition and most people get a good resale value for them. Especially on the TP. So you came get some for a good price and resale them for almost the same price. Not too bad in my book.

Proraps are a good cheap standard (white and some solid colors). We used the "classic" and it worked with Jack and his chubby thighs. Some people like Bummi's (they have prints).

One of my favorite places to order bulk stuff (prefolds, fitteds, creams and covers) is either NaturalBabies.com (Colleen is fabulous to work with) or NaturalEBaby.com (unfortunately Amanda is closed because of family issues). Check out both sites though to see a neat selecetion of what's out there.

I personally didn't like the Kissaluvs. I don't care for how the terry feels wet. Like a soggy wet towel. Yuck, I didn't find they were terribly absorbent either. Both my DC were avid nursers and super soakers so they were drenched within an hour.

OK, you experienced CD mamas, I am too scared to go over to the diapering forum to ask this one so I'm posing it here.

The prefolds that we have are approximately 14" wide by 16" long. Does anyone know what size these are (infant?) and how long they will fit? They seem extremely small compared to some of the other prefolds I have seen. They are certainly their shrunken size, because they've gone through 3 children.

Jen- what color is the stitching on the end of the diapers? Most cpf will be the following measurements when fully shrunk

Preemie- 8x11 white stitching
Infant- 11.5x13.25 dark green
Premium- 13.5x20 blue
Toddler- 15x20 bright green

Sounds like you have a size between Infant and Premium. How long they will fit depends on how fast your baby grows. My girls fit infant size until around 4-6 months. My boys outgrew infant size before they were even 2 months old. The size you have will probably fit until about 6 months.
